    Those are some scary numbers...

I'd wouldn't shocked if the Eagles are hitting Beatle numbers in the States.

Ah, but a lot of this is coming from streaming...
"Hotel California" and pretty much the entire Eagle catalog does some gain its wealth from the stream.

Honestly, I didn't think it would skyrocket those numbers, but 2006 was a good while ago...

    USA only.

The first and the third best album of all time with Greatest Hits and Hotel California. I find that amazing. They have radio to thank. Come to think of it, I know of no passionate Eagles fans like other bands have … not saying they don't exist. Power of the masses buying catchy tunes I guess.

And me without a single Eagles record. What could be wrong with me?

Sounds like the change to include streaming has thrown the numbers all out of whack. 9 million in 12 years for a 43 year old album? And similar for Hotel California.

well first I suppose i should say that I think physical sales and streaming need to be calculated and charted separately.
second the Eagles were a great band, no matter how maligned they are by the cool kids.
third hotel california would have nothing to do with the first eagles greatest hits

    @MJD

Where did these additional nine million units come from?

Not surprised at all - this is the kind of music normal Americans like/buy, not Pet Sounds, Forever Changes and The White Album - but I am surprised anyone's still buying the first GH (71-75). Why would they still be buying that, when they could grab a later version with the HC hits? Instead of all that hokey early stuff?

The Eagles didn't get interesting until OOTN, IMO.

Don't forget itunes download sales since 2006. It's one of those albums that probably clocked up a fair few download sales before downloading fell off a cliff.

Probably going to see a fair few updates in all of the top selling albums as streaming of 1500 tracks from an album now counts as a 'sale' so artists that weren't previously on streaming services like AC/DC, Pink Floyd should see a boost from users who may not have bought an album but will happily stream.

But as Michael Jackson has over 31 million monthly listeners and Eagles have just over 9 million it might well swing back the other way in 5 years time.

Seriously: As it says in the article:
Now 1,500 streams of an album is equivalent to an album sale. Also, 10 song downloads = 1 album sale.

This of course is NOT an album "sale" in my book, but the record industry needs to hold onto something that is make-believe. It's also a totally random "rule", which can in the future be changed to a different number.

So leads one to wonder how significant a drop off in sales are for the remainder of the catalog after GH and HC. Guessing that OOTN and TLR did rather well, but hardly anywhere near this level.

Once they switched to counting streams and single song downloads, this chart list its meaning.

The previous tallies are IMHO the last ones with clear meaning.

Streaming is revenue generating (cough), so why not include it with record sales charts? Agree that the charts will lack clarity unless it says X - physical, Y streaming, Z combined. It might well do this but I haven't seen the breakdown.

Call it "Best Selling Streaming Album" and then I'm okay with that.

But a stream does NOT equal a physical sale.

Then in the future, when those “faux equivalent estimations” of “ # of streams= Album= # of downloads= Album sales “
are randomly recalculated, year to year comparisons will still be made, essentially regarding Apples and Oranges.

That confusing information, confuscation of facts, and the public inability to truly assess accurate sales figures is actually beneficial for the Music Industry.

Exactly. Which is why the record industry continues to perpetuate this myth.

The major channels playing "Hotel California" on classic rock radio every single hour sure doesn't hurt.
