The Eric Clapton album by album thread

    The rules are simple:

    1. We discuss each of his solo studio and live album in chronological order until the topic runs dry.

    2. We discuss everything Clapton solo related: from album contents thru LP’s and CD’s masterings/pressings/versions, to other related stuff.

    3. Everything he’s done outside his solo work, is excluded here (of course we can relate to it in, but we focus on his solo career – too much love would kill the thread).

PS. I am inspired by phoenixhwy1982’s idea of The Judas Priest album by album thread.

Thanks for this! I recently picked up the "Cream of Clapton" disc, and thought it was fantastic. I'll be very interested to read this and see what others think are his best albums. ("Layla" is another favorite, but that's not Clapton solo.)

I was thinking about the thread mechanics last night, and would like to add some twist to it.

Let's do it the other way around and discuss EC solo output from most recent to oldest.

    Sorry for inconvenience.

    Thank you!

Great solo debut! I prefer the Delaney Bramlett-mix on disc 2 of the deluxe.

    On a logistics note:
If you start with 2016 and work backwards, you likely will have fewer participants joining in this thread initially because most people here are much more familiar with Eric's older albums. (And someone like me, I can't even comment at all on his most recent album as I do not have it). So it might be hard to generate a lot of enthusiasm for this thread if you work backwards. It might be slow going for quite awhile. Usually these type of threads start off with a burst of energy and loads of comments; and then after a few weeks/months, they peter out as they approach the present day. Just wanted for you to be aware of that.

I've got most up to circa 2000 and then a couple of later albums... got the DVD of One More Car, One More Rider recently and that is a great live show. I'm not missing many up to Unplugged - except for some live ones and a few that were re/released retrospectively. So I'm a bit of a fan! I've got a lot of compilations as well; they're always a good listen and often get me back into playing his 70s records.

Looking forward to this thread taking off and being 'prompted' to buying the albums I've not yet heard. :D I was typing that I have Me And Mr Johnson on order... and it's just popped through the letter box as I was doing that. So I know what I'll be listening to later on.

    Carry on! :righton:

One More Car, One More Rider is magnificent! I mean listen to My Father's Eyes or River Of Tears. Fantastic. Wish they release it on vinyl one day.

Live In San Diego is from the band that included Derek Trucks & Doyle Bramhall II. Plenty of hot guitar playing, especially EC who seems to raise his game with the young guns in tow. Plenty of tracks from the classic Layla album. A mini set featuring JJ Cale is a rare treat that was exclusive to this show. Queen Of Spades shows why Clapton is ranked as one of the all time great blues/rock guitar players. Excellent release.

I have no wish to hijack this thread but I agree with Arnold. I also think including albums like Live Peace in Toronto and Delaney and Bonnie is stretching it a little. If you are going down the latter road why not include The Concert for Bangla Desh, Live in Japan (with George Harrison) and his numerous guest appearances. Just my thoughts.

I love the Eric Clapton album. He rips the guitar on Let It Rain, and Jim Gordon is in top form, as always.

Yes, but let's try as it is and see how it turns

  17. I edited your list to show the solo EC albums I own, which is 19. I also have an unofficial 2LP live release called Live at Budokan. I have many other albums from his participation in other bands, such as The Bluesbreakers, Blind Faith, Cream, etcetera. Once we got to the eighties I stepped away a bit as I found much of that output rather uninspiring. I did see him 3 times in the early-mid seventies.

I'd be interested to read that. :) I saw him in London's Hyde Park in 1996; spot how much a ticket cost back then...

... you'd think that was a misprint but it was a charity event and I couldn't believe the bus wasn't even half full. And he wasn't alone, as we see! It's also out on DVD and of course, I have that. I'll make a point of watching it again tomorrow night.

I don't intend to derail the thread but wanted to express my interest. I only wish I could brag about seeing him with Cream circa '67 but I would have found that difficult because wasn't born for another few years. :D

He was still a wild and restless soul on his debut. I think it's got more in common with all the 60s band projects than the 'mature' debut album "461 Ocean Boulevard" in 1974. That one is pretty much Clapton of today.

There's so much to Eric. Different important stuff to different people. Let's talk, and I think the reviews will emerge. I am going to write them album by album anyway. It's gonna take time, but hey, it is all about the longest pleausure it can get. Peace.
