Reporting in to mention Record Collector 477, dated March 2018, which includes many pages of Fall stuff, including Stewart Lee bringing his wonderful Primer (the first part of which is here: A Primer To The Fall | Stewart Lee ) up-to-date.

Any idea what's on it? I had Levitate on the car today, played it through twice. Very entertaining LP, all over the place, but in a good way.

Thx! No great surprises. Will be nice to have Calendar more widely available, that’s a great b-side.

Just found this quote in an Uncut from 2006:

"If it's me and your dog, Eric, it's still The Pretenders, and if you don't like it, you can **** off!"

Apparently Chrissie was impressed by that MES quote:evil:

I recently had a go on brand new copies of the Superior Viaduct Live at the Witch Trials and Slates.

Witch Trials sounded pretty good but had a sizeable bump in the pressing on one track.

Slates was awful. Distortion on the right channel on both sides and Side 2 on top of that just sounds dreadful and thin. Nothing wrong with my setup and I’ve had an original Slates since 1988 and three different CD versions so I know how it should sound.

I don't own their Witch Trials reissue but I will give a listen to Slates with headphones and see if I notice anything like you mention on mine.

Yes, would be interested to know.
It isn’t just some “not as good as original” type thing what I heard, it was awful. Listen in particular to his voice in the right channel on any song during louder bits. And hear the volume or something lower during Side 2.
Presuming they are all awful of course, they might not be.

I must apologise for the above post. I was listening to a previously perfect copy of Can's Monster Movie and it had a similar problem to Slates. Other things in between Slates and Monster Movie have been fine, but I think I have developed a loose amp switch or something with the problem only coming and going. Sorry again, the Viaduct Slates is fine!

PLEASE IGNORE ALL BLUESPEEDWAY WORDS ABOUT SLATES, HE IS MENDING HIS AMP!

That's funny because I was just coming here to reply that I listened to Slates last night on headphones and didn't notice any of what you were saying on my copy.

No harm done though because it was a half hour very enjoyably spent!

Prompted by ToneLa's message above I actually got an order in at £17 at az.uk before it went to "usually dispatches in weeks", but quickly got a message saying it wouldn't ship for some weeks. When I got a followup a couple weeks ago saying it still wasn't ready to ship I pretty much gave up on it. Imagine my surprise when I got an email today saying it was on the way! About US$25 with shipping to US. I'm going to take this as a final "Here ya go, cock" from beyond the grave from MES and look forward to its arrival.

In the new MOJO is a hilarious letter where the writer takes objection to MES being favourably compared to Dylan. :biglaugh:

I agree, no way has Dylan got the same depth of a quality catalogue he hasn't really produced many exciting and energetic records since JWH

You could pick a few out of that fifty year stretch. He's as good a songwriter as he's renowned to be. I am much more interested in MES at this stage of my life, though.

Can I please interject a question, as this thread is taking a break, and I did a search and couldn't see any other appropriate place? Regarding the singles compilations, I'm interested in the Singles 1978-2016: Deluxe 7CD Boxset, which is getting mixed reviews, and I already have these:
    [IMG] [IMG]

There's lots of duplicates and some not on the 7CD box. Get it all?

The 7CD box covers their entire career, while the two you display only cover 6 years (one label). Not sure what you’re asking, but there’s lots of good stuff before and after the Beggars years, so go for it.

I can't speak to the sound quality of the recent Cherry Red singles set but it looks like at least half the tracks are not on the As and Bs sides comps. That's not a bad way to collect those songs. Has it been getting negative reviews? Cherry Red are not known for their attention to detail.

On another note, I am still waiting for some more Fall reissues to be announced. It's been very quiet.

Edit: And I don't mean crap like this obviously - The Fall & Mark E Smith* - Best Of
