My first real stereo after being given by my parents, various crappy Electrophonic and GE plastic, all in one jobbers.
Was a Sony STR-6036A receiver with a Dual 1225 TT and KLH speakers. All of which I still own to this day, though no longer use.

In fact cleaning out a closet the other day. I found the Sony. And it is surprisingly good condition considering it is almost 50 years old at this point.

In 1994 when I was 14 I bought my first real stereo with my own money from my first real job. It was a Kenwood. I got the receiver, 5 disc cd changer and cassette deck.It was huge and loud..and I still have it and use it today. I have my turntable hooked up the receiver now and the cd and cassette deck are packed away. it cost me around 800 bucks back then.

Mine was a Sears Silvertone console pulled from someone's trash. It looked like crap but everything worked. I wasn't allowed to bring into the house because it looked so bad. Somehow I got my hands on one those antiquing kits that were so popular in the 70's and refinished it. After that Mom was okay with it.

It's a bit like the one I bought - also in 1968. (See 46 above).

My first decent system was around 1979-1980 and consisted of a basic MCS Receiver and Speakers from JC Penny, A Pioneer CT-F750 Cassette Deck and a Technics SL-D1 Turntable. This got me through High School and College and then some. I still have everything but the Turntable. I think, prior to this I was using a portable cassette recorder plugged into a 1950's Motorola HiFi.

My first so-called "stereo" record player as a kind was a Radio Shack Clarinette 12. It was really apiece of junk, but I used it a lot because it was all that I had.

My first real stereo was a set of Dynaco tube PAS3 - Stereo 70 combo combined with a Pioneer PL-100 TT, and some home-made speakers that my brother made which were handed down to me in 1980 when my Dad decided to "upgrade" his stereo to a Technics receiver.

OMG, I had a virtually identical Monkey Wards unit, which the 'rents got me around '74 or '75. I think it was this one:

It sounded like crap, by the way. I think the ceramic cart and amp were OK for what they were, but the speakers were total garbage.

My first purchase was in '78 or '79 when I bought a Philips receiver, turntable and speakers. It did a fine job until I got my Navy bonus and upgraded to Adcom / Thorens / JBL equipment around '83.

Ohh man, I know the first was one of those all in one deals from Monkey Wards my parents bought me.......8-track record/player, AM/FM and turntable built in to the top. Had 2-full range speakers, somewhere around 1975-76.......Then for good grades my dad bought me a cassette deck by Superscope. Then the next summer on vacation, it was taken on a house robbery.

First Stereo phono: GE Wildcat (never worked right, chiseled styrene records in one play, repaired by GE service 3x, then refunded mom's money)
Second Stereo phono: 1964 Philco Stereo phono with AM/FM, VM 1200 record changer. Tetrad cartridge, tracked at 2 grams. Much much better.
Third game changer HiFi, 9 years old, 1973 and soldering required. Dynakit Stereo 70 power amplifier, Dynakit PAS 3x preamplifier, HH ScottKit LT 112 FM tuner (unsold leftover kit closeouts), Dynaco A 25 loudspeakers, and AR XA91 with Shure M75EJ downgrade. (worked better in the AR arm, dealer recommended, saved $15), had a blast kit building this system. Cost less than $240 all in.

  16. It was a nice JC Penney component stereo system from the attic that was I guess my Dad's. It was from the early 70's. I received it on my Birthday, probably in '87. Maybe '86. I had had several tape boom boxes and cheap record player before. I was around 9 at the time I got it. It was a receiver with a 8 track player. It had a record player, plus I got a single tape deck which, I don't remember what it was. It should be back in the attic, and I will find it someday. It was a very nice system for a kid, but all I did was listen to music, collect ball cards and comics - so, it was actually one of the few thoughtful things my parents ever did. I knew nothing of it, nor was I asking for something like this, so when I woke up that morning and it was on the other wall across from me, set up ready to go - I was certainly puzzled. And I am to this day as well.

National Panasonic suitcase style all- in-one TT, tuner/amplifier and tape deck system, with speakers as lids to casing.
Very well built and great sounding at the time, and for what it was.
    I was 15, 1985 (in Europe).

My first player was from Philips, the basic multi-changer with a lid, this was early 60s, they brought out a separate box with amp inside to do stereo. think I was the first on my block to go that way.
My first real system was early 70s and was it good, Thorens TD160, Shure M75ed, Pioneer SX 737 and Goodmans Magnum speakers, a friend is still using this system, with some tweaks today.
So I can still hear my first venture into Hi-Fi some 40 years later.

First stereo I ever bought was the Koss XJ-1 back in '95.

Promptly replaced the speakers with a pair of Jensen JHS-63 bookshelves.

This setup lasted my entire freshman year of college.

My dad took me to Lafayette Electronics around 1969-70. I was 15. Came home with the Panasonic RE7700 receiver and a Gerrard 40b. That Panasonic with the auto seeking buttons was the coolest thing I ever saw:

Since then, I've progressed 4 whole years to the 1974 Pioneer SX 1010!
