In some circles, substituting John Mayer for Jerry Garcia constitutes child abuse. btw- 10 April 1978 features a great Brown Eyed Women.
I'm listening to Dave's Vol. 3 because I saw a post just now where Archtop is listening to the Grateful Dead. That's what's happening and I can't really explain it. Plus I'm a little wiped from going out last night, so GD is a great default when I get home. "Too tired, can't think, play Jerry."
"Bob Bralove: There was a big shift when Vinnie joined the band after Brent's death, because Vinnie was more of a piano player than a synthesist. After Brent, Jerry asked me to lose the [Hammond B-3 organ] from the rig. I don't know why; he never really articulated it. He wanted to move somewhere else with it. It may have been an emotional connection with Brent."
GA for Salt Lake City Dead&CO is a go baby. Let's hope everything works out so I can make the show next June
I would venture so far to say that all of the 70s had good first sets. There are a lot of Playins and WRSs in 73 and even a few Eyes in 74. Some of them may be fairly interchangeable, but not very many are lackluster as can happen in the 80s-90s.
Of course, '72 is really awesome with Pigpen doing a third of the songs but I tend loose interest faster than 76-79 for some reason. The second sets is the opposite
Was watching Dear Jerry on blu-ray last night. It's quite enjoyable but I like Move me brightly better. Anyway, the crowd shots are very annoying on Dear Jerry, they linger way to long on some people
Hard To Handle, Dark Star-> Wharf Rat-> Dark Star-> Me & My Uncle 71-02-18. The early stages of the amazing '71 sound. Also the first Betty board I believe
Does anyone know specific recording dates for Jerry Garcia Band 'Shining Star' disc? » I kinda like to know as well
jepp, the beautiful jam gets me everytime. that port chester show was one of the very first I've heard 10-12 years. time to make a road trip out west and stop in austin, tx for some more Dark Star and maybe a little NFA Speaking of the Dead »
I think I made a similar comment a few hundred pages back, but the 'beautiful' jam in that return to Dark Star is simply astounding for improvised music. The gestalt mind at play, there.
I attempted Dave's Picks 20 last night. It put me to sleep. I was tired, but that finished the job. Not a good choice for the series; probably the worst of the 20 releases so far. Maybe 2 and 4 give it a run for the booby prize, but it's not something that I will return to any time soon, or maybe ever.
a few hundred pages? What was that, like a month ago? You didn't like 2? One of the highlights of the series for me. I haven't heard 4.
I think this came up awhile back, maybe a different thread, but I don't recall anyone knowing. I think "A double CD collection of songs recorded live between 1989 and 1993" was as specific as it got.
A few years ago no one seemed to know all of the recording dates for Reckoning or Dead Set. A few detectives including me went to the Archive and solved that. JGB isn't on the archive so it would be a challenge to figure out that Shining Star disc.
