I also prefer the fireball energy of 1972 versions of Playing in the Band, but that 7/1/73 Playing is mesmerizing! (And helped by an outstanding audience tape.) Apparently they started off the second set with it, which was pretty rare in '73.
I enjoyed disc 1 of The Grateful Dead Movie Soundtrack last night. It's a fun compilation disc. Oh, and there was definitely some "noodling" during the 30-minute "Playing in the Band" (10/16/74)
I don’t recall a booklet in the version from the Beyond Description box, which is what I have (and is the same remaster). The set has a book that deals with what liner notes usually do. Can’t speak for the standalone. How faded is the cover - that could be a wear issue, a misprint, how it’s supposed to be or sign that you bought an illicit bootleg. No way of knowing without pictures.
People who see "Grateful Dead" on the cover (title is irrelevant), and are aware of how much $$$ GOGD recordings are bringing on ebay. GTH isn't wonderful, but for me it's better than the next two by some distance. Better than the Shakedown Street album as well.
No booklet, no fading cover. I love the photo, imagine going to Fantasy Island and instead of Mr. Roarke and Tattoo, you find these guys:
I'v'e been listening to a lot of Dylan these last few days, and of course he looms large in GD land. The GD covered Dylan 945 times from 1966-95. Dylan songs the GD played w/o Dylan: All Along The Watchtower Ballad Of A Thin Man Desolation Row Forever Long It Takes A Lot To Laugh, It Takes A Train To Cry It's All Over Now, Baby Blue Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues Knockin' On Heaven's Door Maggie's Farm Quinn The Eskimo Queen Jane Approximately She Belongs To Me Stuck Inside Of Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again Visions Of Johanna When I Paint My Masterpiece 92% of the GD's Dylan covers happened from 1985-95. ^Hmmmm. Interesting. Question: Did Garcia get the lyrics off better with Hunter or Dylan penned songs during that '85-'95 era?
I just listen from my phone with crapoy earbuds at work. The android app does support chromecast but last time I tried, it didn't work with gapless playback. But connecting a phone or tablet to a stereo/reciever shouldn't be a problem. 3.5mm>rca is just one way
Forty trips, and only once disc? Beginners... https://www.amazon.com/Greatest-Hit...is-20&linkId=f78e7e46be9dc9c60e6002f72574978f
We must be over the rainbow, rainbow, rainbow, rainbow... Wait a minute! This is the Grateful thread!
Dusted off Dick's 33. Forgot how much I like this pick. Lean towards the 10/10 show a bit but both are great.
my brother lived up that way years ago. I remember the tunnel very well on my first visit on our way to mt. tamalpais.
Back into really getting into disc 4 of Dick’s 31 from 8/6/74. Last time I found this (and the other music from 8/4 & 8/5) to be overly funkified but today oh my despite the most serious whacked out Donna wailing. Jerry & Phil are on fire.
Heard 2 cool little things today on Sirius that made me think "why didn't they do that more often or take it farther?" 8/28/88, NFA has a cool little Deep Elem Blues tease at the end. I think it's Bob with some primitive midi equipment. Would have been cool if they played the whole tune. 10/18/74, Dark Star, I swear the band seems to veer into Wharf Rat for a minute, but Jerry stays in DS. I can't find the moment now but I know they probably did Wharf Rat after DS from time to time, but seems like there was an opportunity for a nice transition jam there as both songs hang around the 'A' chord.
not quite but pretty close. Grateful Dead Venue RFK Stadium Location Washington, DC Date 6/10/73 - Sunday Dark Star [25:43] > He's Gone [14:07] > Wharf Rat [8:21] > Truckin' [7:01] ;
Quick note on Dick's 33. The Dancing>Wharf Rat>Dancing looks strange on paper but it works, big time. Stella Blue has a very unique outro jam, unlike any I can recall.
