Jim & Co. were recording from the 1st row at Red Rocks. On these recordings the sonic character of the rocks and how the sound bounces around comes through quite nicely.
Lolololol at Weir Yea she's from near New Haven but thankfully her and my Pop move to Florida in the 80s. Shes good haha.
Four times the audience was louder than the band: 11 October 1983- MSG. St. Stephen. 20 March 1986- Hampton. Box of Rain. 15 December 1986- Oakland. Touch of Grey. 9 October 1989- Hampton. Dark Star. Got any others?
Not sure if it's louder than the band but I remember the crowd was raucous when Phil sings his solo verse in "Keep On Growing" from the Greek Theater June 14 1985. And probably when he and Brent first sang "Gimme Some Lovin'."
12/30/79 show on Bonus Disc sounds like a reel to reel - same quality of sound as 12/26/79. Are you/we sure Betty didn’t tape this show as well?
She may have taped it. (However, the copies on db.etree of this show are listed as being from a SBD->Cassette master, so her tapes may not have escaped from the vault other than the bonus disc.)
IWT, I seem to remember it took some of the room a little too long to figure out what it was, especially given the deliberate Lesh start, to really get a '89 Dark Star voice going; but it was a Cutler FOH show so you may be right. It doesn't hold up on tape too well for me but man I was sure impressed they gave it a shot on the night as I always loved that song. Thinking back on it, it was the first time I saw Lightning Bolt, so that was how long I was away, and I was thinking oh maybe a new vibe happening. Another one to consider is the '88 Ripple, one where IWLTBT.

With respect - while I don't doubt that there are pockets of appreciation here and there, I'm appealing to the evidence. The good citizens of SH.tv land expressed a different opinion in the voting booth. ....and twice at that!
The 1979 New Year's run shows were all recorded on reels, but I believe they are the FOH (front of house) mix, not a dedicated mix by Betty. Better sound than cassettes for sure, and it's noticeable on the two releases we have from that run.
I found Jeff Norman's interview from the third Compendium and he mentioned that for 12/26/79 they had two sources, a Healy Dolby B cassette of the house mix, and a different mix on Betty's reel that I assume she set up (Norman didn't specify), and that they had to use Healy's cassette to cover Betty's reel changes. From another interview (I think with Dick Latvala somewhere), I remember reading that Betty recorded the first set at 7.5 ips and the second at 15 ips.
I have found myself stuck in France 1974. Started into Dijon the other night (18 September), and have carried on to Paris (20 & 21 September) in turn. I had a tape of Dijon back in 80 or 81, a long time favorite and one of the first shows from 1974 I had in my collection. PS- There is great music here in all 3 shows.
Ha. OK. There you go. Now I know. Thank you. EDIT: Or maybe I don't know...but now I know. I think I'll stick to "well".
