Unfortunately I was not there. I got on the bus in 1976 and it was one of the early cassettes I got.

Gotcha and very cool regardless! Was it the SBD at that point or an AUD of some sort? Never seen the latter circulating.

Just drove route 180 from Carlsbad NM to El Paso TX

    Played 1 2 72 Winterland.

Good Lovin-China Cat-Good Lovin was insane.

But so was the ride. Holy mother of hell most gorgeous ride ive ever taken. Didnt hurt that the guys played every cowboy tune in their repertoire on this excellebt show.

    Phenomenal experience. Highly recommended. :)

Took me five or six years after buying that and Egypt to listen to another note of 1978 with open ears.

I still remember getting this tape very early in my collection.
    Three sets!
    New Year's Eve!
    Last Show At Winterland!
    Dark Star!
    St. Stephen!

Then I listened. Found it kind of a bore.
Definitely soured me on 78 for a long time.
I'm a little more open to it now, but it still ranks last for me in the Keith years.

Because I was already hooked on '77, I guess it was more that the slop factor(y) really shocked me. In fact, I haven't dared to relisten this one yet. Because I still couldn't stand Rocking the Cradle when I had to rebuy it last year.

The bonus disc for Winterland is great and I do like the Road Trips-Egypt thingie rather a lot. And every other official '78 is pure joy. So there's always that.

It was a SBD. I probably got it 77-78.

A pleasant suprise materialized with my most recent purchase (Winterland Oct.74 Movie Soundtrack) at a nearby flea market. The 'Beyond Description' bonus disc which fetches hundreds of dollars on ebay. I paid $19.99 for this. Miracle disc?

This really doesn't give CR enough credit. He also knows where all the good beer is in Oakland. Bud White can back me up on this.

CR also knew about famous CR's Grren Leaf Rustlers. which was way under my radar.

With all the talk of this release the last week or so. I picked it up at a local shop. Man, this really is phenomenal. Great sound, performance, and vibe. Really loving it!

It's really great! I'm loving it so much I am going to go straight home and stare at my souvenir strip of film cells, which IIRC is a shot of the neck of Bobby's guitar.

I got the Stealie over the top of Keith's piano. I've always meant to somehow process it into a photo. I'm sure there is a way.

So, I didn't share this before, but when I was listening to the US Blues on disc 1, I found myself singing along and mimicking that dude in the front row :unhunh:

1978 is not my favorite year but there are some really good shows.
I played this one a while back but couldn't find my post. This has
a certain vibe that almost reminds me of the '73 tour, laid back,
not as jazzy, but no hurry a'tall. I like the way Garcia rolls along
too. The recording is actually pretty good if you add a few decibels.
The May 11 show, a month that generally finds the band in good form
most years. Disc one currently... great opener of one of my favorite
songs, Looks like Rain a wonderful rendition with Donna and Phil
sounding perfect, and Loser coming on quite strong

I was just singing the verses in my office at work. Not loud enough for anyone to notice though.

I have heard some rumblings or rumors that the Grateful Dead may have been on drugs in 1978. Can anyone confirm or deny this?

I saw that in Steve Parish's recent Reddit discussion, he denied the rumor that the band took mescaline 5-11-78. I guess they just decided to get REALLY into their singing that night. Perfectly innocent youthful exuberance.

Any ideas of the characteristics of the mix to the Dark Star on this release? How is the mix on the The Complete Fillmore boxset compared to the Live/Dead version? I'm listening to a SBD that has Dan Healy's name on it and it's very nice for sure. I've been reading the comments...less washboard, removes a layer, reveals more....etc...

    What are peoples thoughts?

Cold turkey clean in 1978. Dosed and jacked up to the gills in '77 and '79 though.

Phil really pegs the meters on that WRS and the 3/23/75 set is phenomenal.

I am sorry, but after reading his book I do not believe much of what he says.
