I interrupt it to mean that Uncle John's Band is the name of whatever ad hoc collection of musicians that might come together around some campfire to sing and play. "Anybody's choice. I can hear your voice."
Soon. But is that soon enough to save this place? I doubt it Correct answer on the Joelster. Worst of the worse. No, really. Even worse than that.
Been Spinning The RSD Fillmore box. Man do these sound good,=! I don't think I need to ever pull out "Live/Dead" ever again!
I felt a disturbance in the Force. Rick Ghastly in the Grateful Thread?!? We need to have an understanding about things like this.
DeadBase 50 just arrived at my front door. It’s enormous and amusingly heavy, much bigger than the hardcover DeadBase VII I had back in the day. Looking forward to going through it. In addition to the set lists I used to like reading the surveys and rankings and stuff like that, and of course the reviews too.
Enjoying the January 1, 1970 studio out-takes of Working Mans Dead this beautiful Sunday Morning. The first Ripple is quite nice and personal. Too bad there wasn't room for Masons Children on the album. Would of been a wonderful addition. -Zafi
There is a current version doing shows now, since 1989 I think, and play around here occasionally. But the first one I can remember was around the mid 70's. A very fun band that was assortment of friends who didn't take themselves too seriously, but did indeed call themselves Uncle John's Band. I knew some of them, and as I remember they were pretty entertaining, playing Dead, country and bluegrass; back in those days everything was entertaining. NP disc 1... Dave's 4 from one of my favorite years, revisiting this show after a long while and it stands tall among the ten or so performances I have from 1976. Sugaree is playing and I'm getting weak-kneed again. I'm outta here... time for pancakes a la' fluff. lol
It is, it really is! BTW, my post wasn't a dig at you - the idea that the show you were listening to is 02/12/70 has been thoroughly debunked (it's really 02/13/70 early) - but Jay Serafin & his "remasters" was the cause of some amusement in trading circles way back when.
I don't have the complete Fillmore box, just the three CD set. Compared to live/Dead,it blows it out of the water though, crystal clear. Dark Star sounds fantastic!
No problem. It was hotly debated back in the day as to what date it was, but who cares? And I know about the problem that some had with Jay's editing, but like I said this show is amazing, so, what me worry?
So, from what I understand, the RSD Fillmore release uses the Plangent process which wasn't available at the time of the 2005 CD release. I wonder if we can expect a new version of the old CD box set with new transfers, or maybe a hi-res download release? It would be nice as I seem to remember that set had some tape speed issues.
I agree with you this release is fantastic I have a UK copy of Live/Dead and this RSD box version sounds much better. I started with Dark Star, I just could not resist it. So pleased I was able to pick it up, my store only had 2 copies - £60 well spent.
Listened to the Fillmore West box today. Just stunning. My only complaint is that the records have the narrowest run in grooves I’ve ever seen in a record! I’m going to have to get the next 3 sets
Not good enough. From what Jeff Norman told me, the multi-track reels have not gone to Plangent, only his 2-track reel mixdowns made at the time of the LDBS. So the speed/pitch change from the beginning to the end of the 32-33 minute master reels will still be there Ideally, the multi-track reels and the 2-track patch source reels could all be sent to Plangent, but the cost would be high, perhaps about $25k (or more) per show, just for the transferring and Plangent Process.
Well, thanks. Wasn't going to get this since I have the big FW box, but after reading your review(and others) couldn't resist, and found a reasonably priced copy. In the meantime, entertaining myself with this
