Alligator! I love it when Phil calls the tunes ancient. Metzger is reading the lyrics off his iPad. They've fixed the webcast volume issue. "Alligator" was not fully realized by this band. That's Carmine Appice's son on drums, by the way. I think he'd be more comfortable playing with Loverboy. (OK, I'll stop now.)
They started out really hot but stumbled a bit later. No actual complaints from me though. Good song selection and the musical misses were not for lack of effort ha
For me, I need to be there. It's completely different for me when I am. Most of what I saw from home was good. edit: Have a good second set! Don't drink too many beers. (I'm assuming it's intermission.)
NSFW, but the first few minutes are pretty funny: www.archive.org/details/gd1994-02-25.rehearsal.fm-sbd.gmb.91250.flac16/gd1994-02-25t06.flac
That's funny. "We didn't know where you live." "We thought we'd send some guy to your house, but we didn't know which house."
5/26/72, last gig in Europe. "Truckin'"> "The Other One"> "Drums"> "The Other One"> "Morning Dew"> "The Other One"> "Sing Me Back Home" That night, the Dead were the best band in the whole universe.
My love for Bird Song is strong. And it remains my only 'regret' for Europe 72... why oh why was it shelved that tour....
When they brought back "Bird Song" later in 1972 they changed the key and altered the arrangement a bit compared to the 1971 versions. I guess they hadn't taken the time yet to work that out during the Europe tour.
Listening to the Charlie Miller/Bob Wagner AUD source of 4/6/82. At the beginning of set two there is a tuning bit with some licks indicating that they will play "Shakedown Street" and someone in the crowd says "wah wah wah" imitating Jerry's guitar riff. Funny.
Been a bit of a rough work week so far, so this morning I needed a little soul cleansing via Disc 1 of this bad boy: Mostly did the trick.
My favorite Bird Songs are from the Fall 1972 tour. Perfect combination of jamming and Jerry's vocal "feel" for the lyrics.
It was actually kind of tease, in a way. I walked into the elevator at work exactly as those fading notes to start "TOO" kicked in at the very end of the disc. It was hard not to just turn around, cue up disc two and continue walking in the morning sunshine.
See, if they would release these with gapless files, there wouldn't be an issue. You would just turn around and walk out. What could possibly go wrong?
The capacity of CD's should be extended again to fit that entire performance, just like it was done with Ludwig Van's Ninth!
Jolly intro by Count Zacherley Dracula. Full-throttle opening "Casey Jones". Brilliant jamming on "Dancing in the Streets". Solid "China Cat Sunflower", high-energy transition to an excellent "I Know You Rider", which segues directly into a sweet "High Time". A swell "Dire Wolf". A classic performance of "Dark Star", one of my favorites due to (among other reasons) Jerry's lyrical playing, Phil's thunderous bass and the moments of coloured silence. Some beautiful 67+ minutes!
Man you hit right on what I was thinking this morning. I always remember the "China > Rider > High Time" run and "Dark Star", but I'd forgotten how good that "Dancing" is and I was in a good space for "Dire Wolf" today. But, yep, the icing on the cake is that near silence in "Dark Star". Another reminder of Miles' old saw about the notes you don't play.

The brilliant but short for the time Set 2 from 11/17/72 found within Dave’s 11. Great Cumberland then He’s Gone and a tight Truckin’>TOO are the meat of the set.
Great pics! Wow, Phil isn't using the black Horace with the red knobs. I just noticed. I need an @Archtop bass identification.
Thanks! He’s had this new alembic for a few months. It’s lighter than his old alembic. Apparently he switched back to the Horace because his shoulder was bothering him and it was lighter. The new alembic has been his main instrument for a little while now.
