They really had more than one disc worth of genuine 'hits'?

I'm a huge Weller freak, but even a well-curated compilation trek through TSC's catalog would end up being pretty heavily weighted with singles. If you're looking to go beyond the singles, you probably have the original albums (or the box set) anyways.

Rhino Handmade is the great "What If" for so many favorite artists. Really seemed like it was a great business model, but so many potential concepts fell by the wayside.

  7. If you compile all of the bonus EPs that came with the recent Queen remasters, you can easily assemble a four-disc Anthology type package (I should know - I stopped waiting for the real thing and did this myself)!

As for The Idle Race Anthology, this was supposedly a true labour of love for official archivist Rob Caiger, only for a combination of personal health issues, label disinterest then finally a large portion of his archive being "lost" to make the project disappear for good. Similarly, proposals for expanded remasters for the ELO albums Eldorado, Discovery and Time that would bring these in line with more recent titles also vanished from release plans, while a 30th anniversary 2CD Deluxe Edition of Secret Messages was shot down by none other than Jeff Lynne, who still insists that Beatles Forever officially remains locked away in the vault, even though any fans curious to hear this can already do so easily online. Additionally, it's claimed he didn't want such a long-demanded Legacy archival title stealing the spotlight from his own new releases on the Frontiers label. Again, it's not that difficult to create your own version if you know exactly what he originally intended...

    “METAMORPHOSIS”

IT TOOK THREE YEARS OF MAJOR AND MINOR CHANGES TO RELEASE TWO FINAL VERSIONS OF ‘METAMORPHOSIS’. THE ALBUMS WERE OUT IN TIME FOR THE FIRST VENUES OF THE 1975 TOUR OF AMERICA; EVEN IF ROLLING STONES RECORDS PROMOTED THE TOUR WITH THEIR OWN FIRST GREATEST HITS COMPILATION ALBUM, ALL THE INTEREST WAS CAPTURED BY THE LONG AWAITED AND MUCH RUMOURED ‘METAMORPHOSIS’. THE HISTORY OF ‘METAMORPHOSIS’ BEGINS IN 1972 WHEN KLEIN’S ABKCO RECORDS WAS ALLOWED TO RELEASE ONE MORE ALBUM OF IN-EDIT MUSIC, THE LAST ONE, AS FROM THE SETTLEMENT BETWEEN KLEIN HIMSELF AND THE ROLLING STONES. THE CHOSEN FATHER OF THE FORTHCOMING NEWBORN WAS ALLAN (a.k.a. AL) STECKLER. INSTEAD OF GATHERING B-SIDES AND MINOR HITS, HE PREFERRED TO GO BACK TO THE DUSTY ARCHIVES AND TRIED TO GIVE LIFE TO SONGS LEFT DEAD IN THE VAULTS. MAYBE, HE THOUGHT - WITH SELF IRONY - THAT A LITTLE DOSE OF NECROPHILIA WAS REQUIRED WHEN DIGGING SONGS OUT OF DUST AND ‘NECROPHILIA’ WAS THE PROPOSED TITLE FOR HIS COMPILATION. HE TEAMED WITH FABIO NICOLI (ART DIRECTOR AND COVER DESIGNER) AND ANDREW OLDHAM (PRODUCER) AND THEIR PROJECT GOT VERY CLOSE TO THE FINAL OKAY. ‘NECROPHILIA’ WAS GIVEN A CATALOGUE NUMBER (ABKCO AB-4224), SOME HARD-CARD TRIPLE GATEFOLD PROOF SLEEVES WERE MADE AND SOME ACETATES WERE MADE AT THE STERLING SOUND STUDIOS, NYC, ON 12 OCTOBER 1972. TWO OF THE 17 SONGS OF THE ACETATES ARE NOT LISTED ON COVER TRACK-LISTING AND SO WE CAN SUPPOSE THAT SLEEVES WERE PRINTED AT A LATER TIME. THE TWO-SIDED ACETATE PLAYS:
    · A1. OUT OF TIME
    · A2. DON’T LIE TO ME
    · A3. HAVE YOU SEEN YOUR MOTHER, BABY, STANDING IN THE SHADOWS
    · A4. THINK
    · A5. HEAR IT
    · A6. SOMETHING JUST STICK IN YOUR MIND
    · A7. AFTERMATH (Nanker-Phelge)
    · A8. I’D MUCH RATHER BE WITH THE BOYS (Richards-Oldham)
    · A9. ANDREW’S BLUES (Nanker-Phelge-Spector)
    · B1. PAY YOUR DUES
    · B2. LET THE GOOD TIMES ROLL
    · B3. HEART OF STONE
    · B4. EACH AND EVERYDAY OF THE YEAR
    · B5. SLEEPY CITY
    · B6. TRY A LITTLE HARDER
    · B7. BLUE TURNS TO GREY
    · B8. WE’RE WASTING TIME
SONGS ‘DON’T LIE TO ME’(A2) AND ‘LET THE GOOD TIMES ROLL’(B2) WERE DROPPED AND DO NOT APPEAR ON THE AFORE MENTIONED DEFINITIVE TRACK-LISTING PRINTED ON PROOF SLEEVES.
FABIO NICOLI USED A PHOTOGRAPH OF THE GROUP SHOT BY GERED MANKOWITZ IN PREPARATION OF ‘BETWEEN THE BUTTONS’ ALBUM COVER AND ANDREW OLDHAM PROVIDED THE USUAL NOTES FOR BACK COVER. WITH PROOF SLEEVES MADE AND EVERYTHING ELSE READY FOR THE FINAL STEP THE PROJECT WAS STOPPED - AS FAR AS KNOWN - BEFORE THE MAKING OF TEST PRESSINGS. IT’S HARD TO TELL THE REASON WHY THIS PROJECT WAS STOPPED. WE CAN SAY THAT THE ALBUM WAS NOT CONSIDERED BELOW THE GROUP’S STANDARD LEVEL OF QUALITY (NINE OF THESE SONGS WILL BE OKAYED FOR ‘METAMORPHOSIS’), WE CAN SAY THAT THE TITLE COULD BE EASILY CHANGED IF CONSIDERED TOO ‘STRONG’ OR OFFENSIVE. AT LAST, WE CAN SUPPOSE THAT THE EXPLOSIVE SUCCESS OF THE ROLLING STONES’ LATEST TOUR OF AMERICA COULD DEMAND A BEST SELLER ALBUM FOR CHRISTMAS TIME AND NOT A COLLECTION OF LEFTOVERS.
‘NECROPHILIA’ WAS SHELVED, BUT NOT FORGOTTEN. IN 1974, ALLEN KLEIN AND THE TEAM BILL WYMAN/CHARLIE WATTS COMPILED, SEPARATELY, 2 SETS TO BE PROPOSED TO DECCA MANAGEMENT IN TAPE FORM.
“WE WANTED TO HAVE IT DONE HISTORICALLY, SO THAT IT WOULD HAVE AT LEAST HAD A VALUE TO COLLECTORS”(BILL WYMAN) AND SO “WE SPENT MONTHS GOING OVER MATERIAL”(CHARLIE WATTS) AND “WE PROVIDED AN ALBUM WHICH HE (KLEIN) TURNED DOWN. I SELECTED ABOUT 18 TITLES, LAID IT ALL OUT HISTORICALLY, WITH DETAILS”(BILL WYMAN.)
THE WATTS AND WYMAN’S SELECTION WAS QUICKLY RENAMED ‘THE BLACK BOX’ DUE TO ITS PROPOSED PACKAGE CONSISTING OF A THIN BLACK BOX TOGETHER WITH A BOOKLET OF OLD PHOTOGRAPHS, PRESS CLIPPINGS AND RELATED EPHEMERA AND TIED WITH A RED RIBBON. ACCORDING TO THE VERY FEW INFORMATION WE HAVE KLEIN SELECTED 14 SONGS (8 OF WHICH FROM THE REJECTED ‘NECROPHILIA’ PROJECT) AND WYMAN 12 SONGS (ONLY 2 OF THEM WERE ON ‘NECROPHILIA’ TOO).
ONCE AGAIN, ACETATES OF BOTH SELECTIONS WERE MADE AND PLAY:

    DISC ONE (ALLEN KLEIN’S SELECTION)
    · 1. OUT OF TIME (A)
    · 2. DON’T LIE TO ME (A,
    · 3. SOMETHING JUST STICK IN YOUR MIND (A)
    · 4. EACH AND EVERY DAY OF THE YEAR (A)
    · 5. I’D MUCH RATHER BE WITH THE BOYS (Richards-Oldham)(A,
    · 6. SLEEPY CITY
    · 7. WE’RE WASTING TIME (A)
    · 8. TRY A LITTLE HARDER (A)
    · 9. SATISFACTION (live version)
    · 10. FANNY MAE (Levy-Glasco-Lewis)(
    · 11. I DON’T KNOW WHY (Riser-Hunter-Judkins-Hardaway)
    · 12. DOWNTOWN SUZIE (Wyman)
    · 13. MEMO FROM TURNER
    · 14. I’M GOING DOWN

    A.....ALSO ON ‘NECROPHILIA’ ACETATE;
    B.....BOTH ON KLEIN’S AND WYMAN’S SELECTIONS;
C.....ALSO ON BILL WYMAN’S SELECTION FOR ‘THE BLACK BOX’

    DISC TWO (BILL WYMAN’S SELECTION)
    · 1. IF YOU LET ME
    · 2. GODZI
    · 3. PANAMA POWDER ROOM
    · 4. GOLD PAINTED NAILS
    · 5. FANNY MAE (Levy-Glasco-Lewis)(
    · 6. DOWN IN THE BOTTOM (Dixon) - a.k.a. MEET IN THE BOTTOM
    · 7. BRIGHT LIGHTS, BIG CITY (Reed)
    · 8. COPS AND ROBBERS (McDaniel)
    · 9. I’D MUCH RATHER BE WITH THE BOYS (Richards-Oldham) (A,
    · 10. LITTLE RED ROOSTER(live at Regal Theatre, Edmonton, London on 5.3.66)(Dixon)
    · 11. DOWN THE ROAD APIECE(live at Regal Theatre, Edmonton, London on 5.3.66)(Raye)
    · 12. DON’T LIE TO ME (A,

NO PROOF SLEEVES ARE KNOWN TO EXIST, NO CATALOGUE NUMBER WAS CHOSEN AND NO TEST PRESSINGS HAVE EVER SURFACED, BY NOW. “WE GAVE HIM (KLEIN) OUR ALBUM AND HE SAID NO” (CHARLIE WATTS). ONCE AGAIN, THE PROJECT WAS STOPPED.
IN 1975, TWO COMPILATION ALBUMS WERE PREPARED. THE FORMER WAS CALLED ‘STONE RELICS’ AND WAS STOPPED, AS USUAL, AT THE ACETATE STAGE. ITS SELECTION INCLUDED SOME WELL-KNOWN A’s AND B-SIDES , BUT ALSO WAS ENRICHED WITH FOUR UNTURNED STONES:
    ‘STONE RELICS’
    · 1. LOOKING TIRED
    · 2. TELL ME, BABY (Broonzy)
    · 3. DOWN IN THE BOTTOM (Dixon)(C) - a.k.a. MEET ME IN THE BOTTOM
    · 4. HI-HEEL SNEAKERS (Higgenbotham)
    · ?. A NUMBER OF PREVIOUSLY RELEASED SONGS

‘STONE RELICS’ - A BRITISH DECCA RECORDS ACETATE - WAS ABANDONED WHEN DECCA RECEIVED THE SET OF TAPES OF ‘METAMORPHOSIS’ AS PART OF ABKCO AGREEMENT. THE SONGS OF THESE TAPES HAD TO BE CONSIDERED MUCH MORE WORTH OF RELEASE THAN THE BRITISH EFFORT OF ‘STONE RELICS’ WAS. THE TAPES WERE RECORDED ON TWO DIFFERENT ACETATES BOTH KNOWN AS ‘METAMORPHOSIS’. THE FIRST ACETATE IS ONE-SIDED AND INCLUDES 7 SONGS; EXCEPT FOR TWO DIFFERENT MIXES (‘FANNY MAE’ AND ‘I’M GOING DOWN’) IT COLLIDES WITH THE B-SIDE OF THE DEFINITIVE BRITISH VERSION OF THE ALBUM. THE OTHER ACETATE WAS OKAYED AND BECAME THE BRITISH ‘METAMORPHOSIS’ WE ALL KNOW.

    ‘METAMORPHOSIS’ ACETATE 1
    · 1. I DON’T KNOW WHY (Riser-Hunter-Judkins-Hardaway)
    · 2. IF YOU LET ME
    · 3. JIVING SISTER FANNY (mix 1)
    · 4. DOWNTOWN SUZIE (Wyman)
    · 5. FAMILY
    · 6. MEMO FROM TURNER
    · 7. I’M GOING DOWN (mix 1)

    ‘METAMORPHOSIS’ ACETATE 2
    · A1. OUT OF TIME (A)
    · A2. DON’T LIE TO ME (A)
    · A3. SOMETHING JUST STICK IN YOUR MIND (A)
    · A4. EACH AND EVERY DAY OF THE YEAR (A)
    · A5. HEART OF STONE (A)
    · A6. I’D MUCH RATHER BE WITH THE BOYS (Richards-Oldham) (A)
    · A7. SLEEPY CITY (A)
    · A8. WE’RE WATING TIME (A)
    · A9. TRY A LITTLE HARDER (A)
    · B1. I DON’T KNOW WHY (Riser-Hunter-Judkins-Hardaway)
    · B2. IF YOU LET ME
    · B3. JIVING SISTER FANNY (mix 2)
    · B4. DOWNTOWN SUZIE (Wyman)
    · B5. FAMILY
    · B6. MEMO FROM TURNER
    · B7. I’M GOING DOWN (mix 2)

THE OLD MANKOVITZ/NICOLI COVER HAS BEEN SUBSTITUTED WITH LINDA GUYMON’S GRAPHIC, AL (a.k.a. ALLAN) STECKLER - DO YOU REMEMBER HIM? - IS STILL CREDITED AS RESEARCHER AND COMPILER OF THE SELECTION AND ANDREW OLDHAM’S LINER NOTES HAVE BEEN PRESERVED AND USED - PLEASE, TAKE NOTE - WITHOUT ANY CORRECTION FOR ‘METAMORPHOSIS’.
OLDHAM QUOTES AND THANKS A LOT OF FRIENDS FOR THEIR HELP IN PLAYING ALONGSIDE WITH THE ROLLING STONES IN THE SONGS OF ‘NECROPHILIA’/’METAMORPHOSIS’. THE MATTER IS THAT HIS LIST OF MUSICIANS WAS COMPILED FOR THE ORIGINAL TRACK-LISTING OF ‘NECROPHILIA’, BUT ONLY 9 OF THE PREVIOUSLY SELECTED SONGS ARE ON ‘METAMORPHOSIS’. JUST FOR EXAMPLE, THE PRESENCE OF GENE PITNEY, GRAHAM NASH AND PHIL SPECTOR WAS STRICTLY RELATED TO ‘ANDREW’S BLUES’; THE SONG’S BEEN SCRATCHED, BUT THEIR NAMES ARE CREDITED ON COVER LINER OF ‘METAMORPHOSIS’. “IT’S JUST A LOT OF JUNK REALLY”(CHARLIE WATTS).

ANYWAY, ON 6 JUNE 1975 THE ALBUMS WERE IN THE SHOPS:
‘METAMORPHOSIS’ (GB, DECCA RECORDS SKL 5212)
    · A1. OUT OF TIME (3:20)
    · A2. DON’T LIE TO ME (2:00)
    · A3. SOMETHING JUST STICK IN YOUR MIND (2:25) - NOT ON USA EDITION
    · A4. EACH AND EVERY DAY OF THE YEAR (2:48)
    · A5. HEART OF STONE (3:46)
    · A6. I’D MUCH RATHER BE WITH THE BOYS (2:09)(Richards-Oldham)

    · A8. WE’RE WASTING TIME (2:41) - NOT ON USA EDITION
    · A9. TRY A LITTLE HARDER (2:16)

SINCE IT’S RELEASE, ‘METAMORPHOSIS’ NEVER REACHED THE STATUS OF A MAJOR ROLLING STONES RECORD. IT’S NEVER BEEN RE-MASTERED, IT’S NEVER BEEN AVAILABLE ON CD AND IT’S NOT IN PRINT ANYMORE; THE LAST RE-ISSUE WAS STARTED IN SEPTEMBER 1988 BY GERMAN LONDON RECORDS AND WAS STOPPED IN MARCH 1990. WHETHER ‘METAMORPHOSIS’ IS ROLLING STONES MUSIC OR NOT HAS ALREADY BEEN DEBATED MANY A TIMES AND I DON’T THINK IT WOULD BE SOMEHOW USEFULL TO DISCUSS THIS SUBJECT ONCE MORE. SURELY ‘METAMORPHOSIS’ IS NOT THE BEST - OR THE MOST INTERESTING, IF YOU PREFER - COMPILATION THAT COULD BE ARRANGED FROM THE BUNCH OF SONGS SELECTED BY THE TRIO STECKLER, KLEIN & WYMAN.

AS FAR AS KNOWN, SONGS THAT REMAINED IN THE ACETATES ARE:

    1. AFTERMATH (Nanker-Phelge)
    2. ANDREW’S BLUES (Nanker-Phelge-Spector)
    3. BRIGHT LIGHTS, BIG CITY (Reed)
    4. COPS AND ROBBERS (McDaniles)
    5. DOWN IN THE BOTTOM (Dixon) - a.k.a. MEET ME IN THE BOTTOM
    6. DOWN THE ROAD APIECE (live version)(Raye)
    7. FANNY MAE (Levy-Glasco-Lewis)
    8. GODZI
    9. GOLD PAINTED NAILS
    10. HEAR IT
    11. HI-HEEL SNEAKERS (Higgenbotham)
    12. I’M GOING DOWN (mix 1)
    13. JIVING SISTER FANNY (mix 1)
    14. LET THE GOOD TIMES ROLL
    15. LITTLE RED ROOSTER (live version)(Dixon)
    16. LOOKING TIRED
    17. PANAMA POWDER ROOM (instrumental)
    18. PAY YOUR DUES
    19. SATISFACTION (live version)(only if not from ‘got LIVE if you want it!’LP)
    20. TELL ME, BABY (Broonzy)

Sorry about the Caps as I cut and pasted this from the IORR web site

The above releases would have been much better than what ultimately became Metamorphosis.

Jimi Hendrix - First Rays Of The New Rising Sun - The material has been spread over various posthumous compilation albums.

Hendrix had written a few conceptual track listings. The following track list written on a 3M tape box has no title and is not in Hendrix's handwriting:[6]
    Side A
    1. Dolly Dagger
    2. Night Bird Flying
    3. Room Full Of Mirrors
    4. Belly Button Window
    5. Freedom
    Side B
    1. Ezy Rider
    2. Astro Man
    3. Drifting
    4. Straight Ahead
    5. Freedom
    Side C
    1. Night Bird Flying
    2. (Drifter's Escape)
    3. (Come Down On Me)
    4. Beginnings [scored out]
    5. Cherokee Mist [scored out]
    6. (Angel)
    Side D
    This section was blank.
On the track listing above, "Freedom" is on both side A and B, and "Night Bird Flying" is on both side A and C. Also, on the handwritten track listing, two songs on side C have lines through them. It is noteworthy that Hendrix did not include many other songs which he had been working on during the summer of 1970, including "Izabella," "Lover Man," "Stepping Stone," "Hey Baby (New Rising Sun)," "Earth Blues," "In From The Storm," "Bleeding Heart," "Burning Desire," "Can I Whisper In Your Ear," "Hear My Train A'Comin'," "Midnight Lightning" and "Send My Love To Linda."
    Other proposed track listings
The last track listing available is for an LP entitled Strate Ahead [sic], which is in Hendrix's handwriting.[6] It is unknown what the crosses, ticks and dashes signify:
    ->Strate Ahead-> x [sic]
    1. Ezy Ryder x
    2. Room full of Mirrors x-
    3. Earth Blues - Today √
    4. Valleys of Neptune -
    5. Have you heard* - √ *aka "Straight Ahead"
    6. Cherokee Mist - instr.
    7. Freedom x √
    8. Steppin Stone √
    9. IZABella √
    10. Astroman x -
      • Page 2/3
    11. Drifters Escape
    12. Angel
    13. Burning Desire
    14. Nightbird Flying
    15. Electric Lady - Slow.
    16. Getting My Heart Back Together Again
    17. Lover Man
    18. Midnight Lightning
    19. Can I Whisper In Your Ear - slow
    20. Sending My Love - slow to medium
    21. This Little Boy
    22. Locomotion
    23. Dolly Dagger
    24. The New Rising Sun (Hey Baby)
These lists include several new songs that were in the process of being created. Some can be heard now on various releases, in early stages of development; others are difficult to identify. It is unknown whether "Sending My Love" is the same song as "Sending My Love to Linda." The song "Burning Desire" only exists in live rehearsal/concert versions and nothing of "Locomotion" is known beyond a couple of early lyric lines on a piece of paper. The identity of the song "Electric Lady-slow" is impossible to ascertain. "This Little Boy" appears to have no references and has disappeared without a trace. Most of the rest of the songs were almost finished when Hendrix died.

I think it was a joke, because the first one was called "Vol. 1" (which I also think was a joke, as they'd already decided to call it a day by that point)...

A compilation of Elliot Smith's non-album tracks would be nice.

Oh, I had no idea it was a "vol. 1." Always had the box set so I never bothered with any singles compilations.

Well, for anyone but Weller completists, it's to be avoided – too much tampering with the songs – and the much later Greatest Hits is a far better comp.

There was a circulating list of the projected VU Bootleg Series releases that went public years ago. For the most part, it was familar bootlegs (some of which have gone on to be officially released in all or part) but I'd still love to find someone with that list again as I neglected to save it.

There's a Squeeze boxed set released in the '90s named Six of One... (consisting of their first 6 albums, natch) that was supposed to be followed up by a box of the next 6 albums in their catalog, titled ...Half Dozen of The Other.

The Simple Minds album by album thread discusses the 12" collection that never came out.

Oh, and the liner notes of the later editions of EMI's Living In Oblivion series mentioned a Volume 6 and a video, but it stopped at Volume 5 (and I think one of the key compilers died).

What about Insane Clown Posse's "The First Six" boxed set? That's disappeared without a trace.

Besides... the final product (which apparently DOES exist, just not in public hands) was disappointing; they originally planned expanded versions of the first six Joker's Cards, with extra tracks originally cut from the albums; what they ended up creating was the six albums as-is, slapped together in a box.

And speaking of ICP, several years back a proposed rarities collection (in the vein of 'Forgotten Freshness') called "Rare and Unheard" leaked online, in unfortunately rather poor quality. This would've been nice to have officially, as everything on it is either unique to that compilation or incredibly rare.

Not sure if this ever existed outside of Internet mumbles, but does anyone else remember talk of a Beatles compilation called "2", which would've included tracks featuring only two Beatles? Kind of a lame idea.

Around the same time, a possible compilation called "Heavy" was mentioned - years later, this became "Tomorrow Never Knows."

Rhino's Andy Zax-produced comps of unreleased Rod Stewart material (beyond Sessions) and the comp of b sides / rarities / soundtrack songs...due 2011 or so. ..they could now fill a little gap in the calendar around Christmas (his new album won't be out until this time next year) but are unlikely to appear..
