I bought it in 1987 and still have it.

It still plays, but doesn't like some CDs these days and struggles to 'find' them.

    Beautifully made machine, though.

Yes, it's very similar, isn't it. I've never seen that one before.

The Content of this Polygram CD is ABBA The Visitors. The CD plays all nine Songs perfectly!

That would explain why "The Visitors" CD was the very first release for the public.

Not sure if it was posted in this thread but I posted this in another thread-

The first commercial compact disc was produced on 17 August 1982. »

Here's a cool little tidbit about a local radio station here in NJ-

By 1980, WDHA had evolved into an album-oriented rock format similar to WNEW-FMat the time. In 1984, WDHA was the world's first radio station to play the then-newcompact disc. By the late 1980s, more heavy metal bands were heard while the station still kept a balance between classic rock and new rock. At this time, WDHA had become a popular station in northern New Jersey.

I believe the first cd they played was Billy Joel.

I don't like the way Bjorn is holding that CD.

That is Jan Timmer between the two ABBA guys. He was head of PolyGram at that time, and would later become the CEO of Philips.

My old Sony CDP-302, picture taken in 2012 for another thread - the last time I had it out to see if it operated. It did.

Like so many other Sony players, it is the drawer operation that has malfunctioned here. When you hit eject, the drawer comes out slightly and snaps back shut before a disc can be put in or taken out. You have to grab the tray and forcibly pull it out to get a disc in there. But when it operates, it has the fastest seek-time of any CD player I've ever used. Push the 5 button on the remote and in microseconds, track 5 is playing.

The CD pictured is the first one I ever bought, Carpenters SINGLES 1969-1973.

Happy 34th Birthday to the Compact Disc!!

Back in 1982, on this date, ABBA's "The Visitors" became the first commercial CD pressed at the West German Polydor CD pressing plant.

Personally, I celebrate the October 1, 1982 date as the CD's true birthday when Japan CBS/Sony unleashed the format upon the public.

I thought this was interesting- a 1985 electronics store ad calls them Digital Discs.

What's that crazy, thick black ring around the bottom outside edge of the "Digital Disc" he's holding? :)

The mirror band. I'm guessing it's Abba's The Visitors or some such disc. Maybe a classical CD. Here's the view from the label side.

Though recorded before the CD age, I think it is generally accepted that Ry Cooder's Bop 'Til You Drop was the first major label album to be recorded entirely in digital (in 1979).

My first "DDD" CD was Jean-Michel Jarre's "Zoolook" in 1984
Apparently the 1985 "Brothers In Arms" was DAD" lol

From another thread (and likely a wikipedia quote as well):

Philips established the Polydor Pressing Operations plant in Langenhagen near Hannover, Germany, and quickly passed a series of milestones.

    Interesting looking at the Wiki list of Waiting for Cousteau;

I have a French dreyfus En attendant Cousteau disc labelled ADD
    https://www.discogs.com/Jean-Michel-Jarre-En-Attendant-Cousteau/release/23117

Whereas the Europe dreyfus / Polydor Waiting for Cousteau is labelled DDD
    https://www.discogs.com/Jean-Michel-Jarre-Waiting-For-Cousteau/release/130356

To be expected :), no doubt a print error.
