Not loud enough to his ears, that is my best guess. The sound representation is good as can possibly be on those old Diament discs.
Oh well, the more for me to enjoy them!

I celebrated by listening to CDs.

Of course, I didn't know it was the 35th anniversary and do that every day anyway, so... :)

I asked this in an ABBA thread but have had no responses. I found this page in the Japan-for-UK CD of Sade's Diamond Life (dated 1984) referring to some UK ABBA CD releases on CBS. Do these even exist? If they did would they just be stickered German or Japanese pressings?

I know that most of the other CDs listed definitely exist, but I can't find any references to the ABBA, Agnetha or Frida ones.

    Anyone know any more?

Are they not the catalogue numbers for Lp’s (ABBA) and cassettes, so not cd editions = A mistake maybe?

They are but with the "CD" added on. I'm interested because all European ABBA CDs seem to have been released by Polydor or Polar, with some French releases on Vogue having stickers added. I'm wondering if the same was the case for the UK, or if any discs were pressed in Japan for the UK, as was the case for most of the other albums listed.

Somehow, Polydor had ABBA on CD in the UK, despite the records and cassettes being on Epic (CBS) - I miss the old Epic labels:

Here is another example of a CBS ABBA CD being trailed, this time in March '83 (I thought Polydor had released The Visitors in October 1982 - their first pop CD, according to the catalogue number):

Only CBS/Sony titles were released in Japan on October 1, 1982

That rings a bell - March '83 was the Europe launch date?

So, was there perhaps a last minute change of plan with Polydor getting the ABBA CDs in the UK instead of them going to EPIC/CBS?

Bruce Springsteen's Born to Run catalog number is also incorrect.

I have some of these releases.

I recently purchased a copy of Gramophone 1983 devoted to CD. Here is a photo of Classical titles available on CD in March 1983:

I know they were all part of PolyGram at that time, but it always struck me as odd that they didn't use different leading codes for the three classical labels, e.g., DG = 400; Philips = 410; and Decca = 420.

Hey, where's my quadaphonic, I want my money back!

"The CD system is designed to accommodate 4-channel recordings, with unprecedented realism because of the high-quality reproduction and virtually total channel separation,"
    from page 10.

Must have been published before word got out enough about the redbook standard? Wonder how they would have done it, I would have probably taken the four eight bit objects at once as one channel each, giving four 8 bit channels without having to provision new crystals and circuitry to use anything other than a 44.1k sampling rate. There isn't more space in the frame is there? Other than sub-codes that went unused?

Very cool, lots of good info in there, thanks for sharing.

  24. CD’s could have easily accommodated matrixed QS or SQ quadraphonic discs in 16/44.1. In fact, they have. Listen to the Dark Side of the Moon tracks on Pink Floyd - Works and play them back through a Dolby Pro Logic surround decoder, or ideally a QS or SQ decoder. I have read there are a bunch of CD’s that were mastered from Quadrophonic sources. I believe that Madonna - The Immacuate Collection was mixed with some sort of matrixed virtual surround, as well.

Granted, this is not playback with “virtually total channel separation” as noted above.

Although not envisioned at the time of the above press materials, DTS CD’s do have five discrete channels, but at a loss of fidelity due to the lossy compression scheme.

The presence of 2-ch or 4-ch audio is flagged in CD's Q-subcode, see my post here:

    Pre-emphasis and OPPO Blu-ray Players

I have no idea how 4-ch was meant to be implemented, as I do not have a copy of the Redbook.
