This has been on repeat to help break in a new pair of headphones; when I sit and listen to it I realize that the Jazz Messenger material has never sounded better to me. Yeah, this is lacking the Pacific Jazz material but this set sounds really good.
Jackie McLean - One Step Beyond Discs 1 & 2 Session A of Mosaic Select - Grachan Moncur III Jackie McLean, alto sax; Grachan Moncur III, trombone; Bobby Hutcherson, vibes; Eddie Kahn, bass; Tony Williams, drums.
John Tilbury & Oren Ambarchi - The Just Reproach - LP Miles Davis - Jazz Track - CD from the Mono box set. Reminds me I haven't watched 'Elevator To The Gallows' in ages. I'm pulling out the DVD to watch later. There's some great footage of Miles working on the soundtrack on the bonus features. Highly essential.
Now: The Complete Blue Note Andrew Hill Sessions (1963-1966) - 7 CDs, Mosaic; disc 6, with 3 tracks from a 1965 date with Freddie Hubbard (trumpet), Joe Henderson (tenor saxophone), Andrew Hill (piano), Richard Davis (bass) and Joe Chambers (drums), and 4 tracks from the 1965 Compulsion date with Freddie Hubbard (trumpet, fluegelhorn on 1 track), John Gilmore (tenor saxophone, bass clarinet on 1 track), Andrew Hill (piano), Cecil McBee (bass), Richard Davis (arco bass on 1 track) and Joe Chambers (drums).
John Tchicai - Anybody Home? Recorded in a cave in the Faroe Islands. The puffins get involved at some point. Nice reverb in the cave.
Jack DeJohnette – Sound Travels (eOne) — With various musicians, including Esperanza Spaulding, Luisito Quintero, Lionel Louke, Tim Ries + Jason Moran, Ambrose Akinmusire, Bobby McFerrin, Bruce Hornsby
Mike Wofford — At Maybeck, Volume 18 (Concord Records) — solo piano; live at Maybeck Recital Hall, Berkeley, CA
I am on an Art Farmer trip and this is the most recent acquisition, a Mercury original stereo pressing from 1962. Great album. The back cover has some interesting notes on it about what recording microphones were used on what instrument, what it was taped on and a section on how the record was cut and how best to set-up your equipment for optimal playback . The music is outstanding. It has an interesting line-up, with trombonist Grachan Moncur III and of course Benny Golson.
Joe Henderson- The Elements I like this, but don't refer to it very often. I forgot there's lot's of cool percussion on this.
Woody Shaw - The Moontrane Woody Shaw, trumpet; Azar Lawrence, tenor & soprano sax; Steve Turre, trombone; Onanje Allen Gumbs, piano, electric piano; Cecil McBee/ Buster Williams, bass; Victor Lewis, drums; Tony Waters, congas; Guilherme Franco, percussion.
Randy Weston Billy Harper- The Roots Of The Blues Have an affinity for duo albums. This one does not disappoint. Really, how could it with talents like this involved?
I agree Blu Tom! Awesome album. Two fantastic artists! Now listening to 1's and 0's on a little silver disc.
Sonny Rollins- On Impulse! Especially like On Green Dolphin Street. Sonny takes some extreme liberties with the melody like only Sonny can do. Also some fine Mickey Roker on (d).
Canadian jazz afternoon! Nihilist Spasm Band - 1x~x=x - CD CCMC - Free Soap - LP Michael Snow - Snow Solo Piano Solo Snow - 3CD (just disc one: Piano Antique: 1948-1994)
