Interesting, didn't know this was coming out on vinyl (I was listening to the old 1990s CD). Honestly at $40 I'm probably out on this one. There's lots to enjoy, but there's many better Henderson records out there. And the CD sounds nice and can be had for literally a few bucks used.

Billy Hart, OCEANS OF TIME (Arabesque CD). Recorded in 1996. Featuring an interesting line up: John Stubblefield tenor and soprano sax, Chris Potter tenor and soprano sax and clarinet, Mark Feldman violin, Dave Fiuczynski guitar, Dave Kikoski piano, Santi Debriano bass. This large-ish ensemble creates a big, fat, inviting sound, with various combinations of the front line players often doubling or tripling lines to create unique textures. They work up quite a fever on several of the tracks, but then can turn on a dime and bring it down to a whisper. I don't know if this was ever a working band, but if not, they play like one here. Hart leads masterfully from the back (the disc's title is apt since his swirling and cresting approach often evokes the sea), and in this line up of stars I give special props to Dave Kikoski, one of the under-sung greats.

I always thought the orchestration works exceptionally well on this album. One of my top Coltrane albums.

(LP Blue Note Liberty Blue White BST-84149) .... recorded March/October 1963 .... Hank Mobley (ts) + Lee Morgan/Donald Byrd (tp) + Andrew Hill/Herbie Hancock (p) + John Ore/Butch Warren (b) + Philly Joe Jones (dr) .... although his tone has changed/darkened Hank Mobley was still in his prime @these 1963 recordings and especially the session with both Lee Morgan and Andrew Hill is treasurable .... unfortunately this never saw re-release via King Records Japan in the late 70`s but the superbly sounding Liberty vinyl press from 1966 is an adequate substitution ....

(LP Nessa N-7) .... recorded February 1976 .... Warne Marsh (ts) + Lou Levy (p) + Fred Atwood (b) + Jake Hanna (dr) .... do return frequently to this stellar Warne Marsh outing from the mid 70`s which features the leader with a sympathetic rhythm section (Lou Levy !!) .... immediate and natural sounding Nessa vinyl press ....

Joe Gordon is an unsung hero on the trumpet imo. Died young in a fire unfortunately.

Yep, and from one of the very best Mosaic sets - music, historical importance, pics, and liner notes (I don't know if the liners won any awards but they absolutely should have - highly illuminating).

I agree! I posted the message below a couple weeks ago, in response to another forum member who said they'd been listening to LOOKIN' GOOD!:

The mastering on that Verve Elite is a bit bright though, I was reminded when I revisited it - so I subsequently found a Japanese reissue of INTRODUCING and it sounds a lot better - still no audiophile gem but the brightness is gone. Still looking for a better-sounding BLAKEY.

Indeed great liner notes, and one of the fattest Mosaic booklets from all my sets.

Is the Complete set on CD remastered by Ron McMaster?

Thanks. All the Mosaic discussion made me go through their running low list, now I have to decide if I want the Threadgill. Really not a fan of those Columbia/Sony albums but the first three are great, makes for one expensive set value wise.
