Interesting album, from 1969, with a very large group of brass and reeds plus strings. While I wouldn't say Kirk's music really "needed" this type of treatment, I would say that he fully met the challenge of trying to pull it off (he did the arrangements) without weighing the music down. Fundamentally, it is still very much his album and feels like a logical extension of his small group work. The 19+ minute "Extensions" looms large but don't let that stop you from enjoying the other, much shorter tracks, which by comparison almost feel like miniatures. I have this as part of this valuable 32 jazz 4 CD set, mastered by Gene Paul (the other 3 discs are other Kirk dates for Atlantic - RAHSAAN RAHSAAN, PREPARE THYSELF TO DEAL WITH A MIRACLE, and OTHER FOLKS' MUSIC):

Did some vinyl shopping during my lunch break. Will report back on these later. I am only familiar with the Freedom Book tracks which I have on a OCJ early 90's cd. Booker Ervin - The Freedom and Space Sessions - Fantasy twofer Charlie Haden & Hampton Hawes - As Long as There's Music. Vinyl looks to be in great shape but alas no booklet.
