Anyone have info on the CD issues Cecil Taylor’s Candid albums? I know there was a Mosaic release (and I hope to get this), but curious about the Candid CD releases. I see that there were some issued in the ‘80s, but also some after the ‘00s that are possibly remasters? Should any of these reissues be avoided?
Get the Taylor Mosaic if you can, the individual stereo CDs don't sound good to my ears. I posted about this back in January: The Jazz Beat The Jazz Beat
New to me...checked out some of the available live performances of Kamai’s band on YT and they are amazing! Added to my wishlist. Thanks for the recommendation.
Charles Kynard - Afro-disiac Charles Kynard, organ; Houston Person, tenor saxophone; Grant Green, guitar; Jimmy Lewis, Fender Bass; Bernard Purdie, drums. Took a chance on an organ lead ensemble and was pleasantly surprised, all of the backing players are outstanding and Jimmy Lewis' bass playing is among the best I've ever heard. This album really cooks! (The Jazz Dispensary 33.3)
I've not heard this set, don't know how I missed it back in my Grant Green infatuation days. I'll have to pick this up. Thanks!
I revisit this one often. A funky, heavy rhythm selection of Funkadelic and Sun Ra tracks reimagined by Vandermark and company. Spaceways Incorporated – Thirteen Cosmic Standards by Sun Ra & Funkadelic Atavistic ALP120CD Saxophone – Ken Vandermark Bass – Nate McBride Drums – Hamid Drake
Another personal favorite! Way up on my all-time list of jazz favorites! Roland Kirk - I Talk with the Spirits Verve Master Edition
...and now I have been inspired to round out the rest of the night on random play of this tremendous set. Roland Kirk - The Complete Mercury recordings

Years ago I had dozens of those hatART and later hatOLOGY CDs with (mostly) European improv, and spent hours listening to them, but they couldn't hold my attention. Difficult to describe my feelings, but I'll try - while interesting up to a certain point I found many of them lacking a certain tension and depth, they sounded soulless/lifeless to me, as if the musicians were trying to make art for art's sake and nothing else. In the end they didn't really do it for me and I sold them all.
Well, HatHut is one of my favourite jazz labels and, obviously, I dig quite a few entries from their catalogue. And even though not every release of theirs is up my alley I would not describe any as soulless or lifeless, because they just happen to be beyond my area of interest. I can understand your perception, some of the music on HatHut is indeed very academic in concept and execution, but there is a lot of variety too, even within their European jazz/improv section. And that Koglmann set is IMO one of their best releases, definitely not too rigid or overwrought (it was actually improvised live without audience). Even if it is an art for art's sake I cannot help but want more of it!
Quite a few of my contacts at the time were into those Euro improv hatHUT and hatOLOGY CDs and I fully understand and appreciate what they (and you) like about them, but it's just not my cup of tea. I don't hate them or anything, on the contrary, but, as I said, they fail to hold my attention, and that's an important factor for me. Don't get me wrong, I don't dismiss academic in concept and execution, but it's not the only thing for me that matters.
