Storyville | Masters Of Jazz - Ben Webster (Storyville) CD featuring Teddy Wilson, Dexter Gordon, Sahib Shihab, Kenny Drew, Al Heath + local musicians. Recorded in Finland & Denmark | 1967 - 1970 Much to my delight this compilation has turned out to be, most surprisingly, my most listened to Ben Webster CD. Although the tracks were recorded at various studio & live sessions over a three year period the entire disc is exceptionally well compiled and all the musicanship is guaranteed to please. The sound on all tracks is also of the highest quality. Just under half the 13 tracks are very successful reworkings of Duke Ellington classics. I have also seen this release for sale as Masters Of Jazz Vol. 4 although there is no mention of Volume 4 on the disc or packaging. Gene Norman Presents A Jazz Concert... Satchmo At Pasadena - Louis Armstrong and The All Stars (Verve Originals/Decca) CD This is, track for track what was on the original Decca LP. Unfortunately that was, like this CD, an edited version of the complete concert, but even in this shortened version it's still a good listen.
I'm interested in a couple of Mosaic sets, and I wonder if you could help me decide. I'm afraid I can only get the Hank Mobley set, but I think I read the Ahmad Jamal set is also very good, so I'd try to get some more money and get it instead. Are both sets mastered well? What's the sound like compared to other pressings? Thanks a lot Hank Mobley Ahmad Jamal Edit: I've noticed I have most Mobley's albums on CD, so I think the Jamal set would be a better choice if the set is well mastered
I’m pretty late to the Mosaic game as most of their sets were already sold out by the time I became hip to them. I’ve had the Roland Kirk LP set for several months, though, and just got the Stan Getz Norgran LP set a few weeks ago, and I also have the Gerry Mulligan Mosaic Select set; all of which I dig a lot. I’ve been trying to track down the Bobby Hutcherson Select set for a reasonable price (there are quite a few I’ve seen on eBay and Amazon that are not reasonable IMO). I’d also like to get two of the bebop era CD sets they still have available (Dial and Savoy sets, I believe).
Probably not much discussion about them because most of the vinyl of years past are all gone. It's mostly just CDs now. That said, I'm a fan of Mosaic. The last two sets I bought were Coltrane's Sun Ship and the Clifford Brown/Max Roach set, which I think I posted about in this thread. I have a decent amount of Mosaic titles. Here are some from my collection over the years - Mosaic Records Boxsets
How do you like the Getz Norgran set? I think I have some of those songs on an LP.... More West Coast Jazz but not sure if that's the same stuff. Bobby Hutcherson....
I only have the Dean Benedetti Charlie Parker set, very scientifically put together and quite interesting.
As some may have heard the Mosaic box of Benedetti recordings of Parker will not be re-pressed and is in very short supply. If you want it, grab it.
Any Bird fan should get the Benedetti set before it's gone. I have most every Mosaic set released. I love this company; I hope they can keep on keepin' on.

It’s great, I don’t have that much of Stan so it was a nice way to quickly get a decent amount with good sound.
Buy with confidence! The Ahmad Jamal set is excellent and sounds good (but bear in mind that these are early recordings with some in a live setting). I also think it is probably impossible to get all the tracks from other sources. It is one of my favorite Mosaics.
