Gerry Mulligan '63 | The Concert Jazz Band (Verve) CD

    with

Gerry Mulligan (baritone sax, clarinet, piano), Don Ferrara, Doc Severinsen, Nick Travis (trumpet), Clark Terry (trumpet & flugelhorn), Willie Dennis, Tony Studd (trombone), Bob Brookmeyer (piano & valve trombone), Eddie Caine (alto sax), Gene Quill (alto sax & clarinet), Jim Reider (tenor sax), Gene Allen (baritone sax), Jim Hall (guitar), Bill Crow (bass), Gus Johnson (drums)

Recorded 1961 (according to the CD booklet) / Recorded 1962 (according to original LP sleeve notes)

A fascinating recording that always sounds fresh and revealing.

  2. The Mulligan session continues with what is, for me, one of the most crucial recordings of the period. I just love all the cool musical vibes on this album!

This album is included in the now OOP Mosaic set The Complete Verve Gerry Mulligan Concert Jazz Band Sessions. According to the booklet the recordings were made on December 18-21, 1962, with this note from producer Michael Cuscuna: "The Verve master numbers indicate that this session was recorded in December 1961 and this is confirmed by the Verve recording log. The original album states December 1962 and while this might be a bit of record label falsification (common at the time) to suit the album title Gerry Mulligan '63, Bill Crow's work diary seems to substantiate that date."

Impossible to say I have a single favorite because they're all so good, but playing a couple of sultry early-60's faves from this guy:

Some photos of the Sonny deluxe set. Sounds pretty good, even though it's sourced from digital. Not worth $80 however.

Blue Mitchell - The Cup Bearers (1962)

1993 Riverside/Fantasy/OJC OJCCD-797-2 mastered by Phil De Lancie

    Blue Mitchell - trumpet
    Junior Cook - tenor sax
    Cedar Walton - piano
    Gene Taylor - bass
    Roy Brooks - drums

With Blue leading, Cedar on piano and Horace Silver's rhythm section, you really can't go wrong. The excellent Cedar-penned "Turquoise" opens this set and gets you hooked, as Taylor looks, Cook cooks and Brooks books. As usual, fantastic sound quality on this Riverside-recorded OJC CD. Below, Blue, Junior and Gene with Horace Silver at Birdhouse, December '60.

You must have read my mind! Just picked up the TOCJ off eBay last week. The sound is up to the standards of the BNLT series so you'll certainly enjoy it once you've scored the CD.

BTW...Great pics of Blue Mitchell in your previous post!

Along with Daddy Plays The Horn, One Flight Up is probably my favourite Dexter album...it's worth it for "Tanya" alone!:righton: I'd like to find it on vinyl at a price where I wouldn't have to take out a second mortgage on my house...some of Dexter Gordon's stuff is bloody expensive on LP!

I'm not 100% certain but it may be the only album on (ECM) that Herbie Hancock plays on. Great album. Bennie played the entire album in L.A. back in December but I wasn't able to make the trip. I don't know who played with him but that would have been terrific to witness.
