I have no other Charles Thompson music at present except this fine compilation CD which includes selected tracks from three Vanguard 10" albums. For The Ears - Sir Charles Thompson And The Hawk (Vanguard) CD 3 tracks are selected from Sir Charles Thompson Sextet 10" LP (1953) with Sir Charles (piano), Pete Brown (alto sax), Joe Newman (trumpet), Benny Powell (trombone), Gene Ramey (bass), Osie Johnson (drums) 5 from Sir Charles Thompson and his Band featuring Coleman Hawkins 10" LP (1954) with Sir Charles (piano), Coleman Hawkins (tenor sax), Emmett Berry (trumpet), Benny Morton (trombone), Earl warren (alto sax), Steve Jordan (guitar), Aaron Bell (bass), Osie Johnson (drums) 4 from Sir Charles Thompson Trio 10" LP (1956) with Sir Charles (piano), Aaron Bell (bass), Skeeter Best (guitar)
I only have one Sir Charles Thompson CD, Takin' Off on Delmark. Unfortunately, it suffers from noise reduction, something Delmark used too often on their releases of Apollo recordings. I'm not a fan of those 1950s "Basie-like" sessions Vanguard specialized in.
Dexter Rides Again - Dexter Gordon (Savoy Jazz) UHQ-CD with Dexter (tenor sax), Tadd Dameron / Bud Powell (piano), Curley Russell / Gene Ramey (bass), Art Blakey / Max Roach / Ed Nicholson (drums), Leonard Hawkins (trumpet). Three different sessions, recorded 1945, 1946 & 1947. Each session has a different line-up. There are 11 tracks in all. I'm very happy to eventually get hold of these early Dexter sides, and the sound on the 1992 Japanese UHQ-CD edition doesn't disappoint.

The Booker Ervin let my jaw drop, it's really that good. Can't have enough Book (especially ob Prestige) I guess. I couldn't wait for the SACDs to come out, it's just taking too long. On top of that, they have dropped the cool mini LP packaging for the Prestige Stereo SACD series.
Just Wailin' - Herbie Mann / Various (Prestige|New Jazz) SHM-CD with Herbie Mann (flute), Charlie Rouse (tenor sax), Kenny Burrell (guitar), Mal Waldron (piano) and George Joyner (bass) & Arthur Taylor (drums) Dated 1958 A 6 track album that includes 3 Mal Waldron originals, 1 Kenny Burrell, 1 Lester Young & 1 Carl Massey. A very cool and relaxed session with everyone sounding liked they really enjoyed Just Groovin' along.
Just put a bit of Gino Vannelli I found recently on - "Storm at Sunup". Probably more prog-rock than jazz, but incredibly strong playing so far and brilliant vocals from Gino. Love his ARP arrangements and keyboard playing, the dynamics of his band's playing and the guitar sound on this. Lyrics are unsurprisingly horrendous pretentious drivel, and the cover is nauseating, but for my first Gino Vannelli effort ever I'm overall enjoying his sound and compositions.
Nice little line up of stuff today. Despite all the vacuum tubes in the listening room, keepin' cool with this stuff playing and the air conditioner and ceiling fan on heavy rotation (topping 100 again here in Davis, CA, USA...).
Duke Jordan - Les Liaisons Dangereuses CD reissue on Century Records / Charlie Parker Records (Japan, 1988). Now wanting to check out Thelonious Monk’s recently-released archival soundtrack from the same movie.
In The Land Of Oo-Bla-Dee / Allen Eager (Uptown) CD Issued in slipcase containing disc in jewel case that includes a remarkable 68 page booklet. Tracks 1-5 recorded 2/1/53, Sunday Afternoon, Hi-Hat, Boston, MA I love the vibe that from this Radio broadcast. Symphony Sid delights at the mic. Track 6 recorded 4/1/49, Friday, Afternoon In Jazz TV Program, CBS-TV, CBS Studios, NYC, NY A "wire" recording so a noticeable drop in sound quality - but the music continues to delight. Track 7-14 recorded at Milton H. Greene's photography studio, 480 Lexington Ave., NYC, NY More gems in this (privately recorded) batch. Musicians featurded include Serge Chaloff, Buddy Rich, Charlie Parker, Bud Powell & Max Roach All tracks previously unissued. I have taken a great liking to the way any Uptown records have marketed so many great out of the way recording sessions. This release is no exception.
