Nice Parisian recordings. The other part of the live session is on "Parisian Thoroughfare" . Two gems before Blue Note period.
Steely Dan sort of qualifies as jazz, don't they? Tonight's commuting music...a soundboard recording from the Pretzel Logic tour in '74 (UC Irvine) that circulates under the title Metal Leg- it just reminds me how good the original Steely Dan band was:

(CD Prestige Universal Japan UCCO-5284 SHM-CD) 2014 .... unheralded little gem and a great sounding edition for sure ....
(CD Blue Note Audio Wave AWMXR-0024) 2011 .... Kenny Drew both as gifted composer and focused band leader .... still unheralded Blue Note bonanza from 1961 ....

True Blue - Hank Crawford (Atlantic) CD 7 tracks were recorded 1963, and 3 are from 1964. Excellent sound on the 24 bit mastered CD, issued as part of Atlantic's Japanese Jazz 1000 Best Collection series. I previously (and foolishly) had basically ignored all Hank Crawford titles. That was a big mistake! I bought this album after seeing it listed in the bargains and am so glad I did now because I enjoyed listening to every slow, smokin' minute of this little gem!
NLT...awesome trombone dominated session from Curtis Fuller and Slide Hampton. Top notch! Curtis Fuller - Two Bones Blue Note UCCQ-9331 Masterworks Top 50 Series Trombone – Curtis Fuller, Slide Hampton Piano – Sonny Clark Bass – George Tucker Drums – Charlie Persip
Very good vinyl. Rare Fruscella Album. Recently, I bought an original first pressing with some flaws in one side. But, I'm very satisfied with this album.

(LP Prestige Victor Japan SMJ-6559(M)) 1977 .... recorded Febraury 1958 .... this and the (sort of) companion album "Settin`The Pace" are my go-to John Coltrane Prestige platters .... the pressing and sound of the Victor Japan edition is unsurprisingly great ....

The Early Ellington - Duke Ellington (AMJ/Everest) CD with guest artists Jimmy Dorsey & Una Mae Carlisle Originally issued on Everest Records Archive Of Folk And Jazz LP. All recording information inside sleeve is in printed in Japanese. I guess all the material on this title is available on other compilations but all versions on this one are new to me. I'm not sure either why the original budget compilation LP was issued in Stereo / Electronically Re-Recorded To Simulate Stereo, or what exactly the mastering engineers did for CD transfer. It all sounds very clean, and lacking a bit in the bass department.
Thank you very much! I'm not a professional and don't have a lighting box, so in order to avoid shadows and glare (I leave some though, gives it a palpable feel) I have to find a special angle for shooting and then do some heavy processing with a perspective tool. I use them as covers for my digitised vinyl in iTunes. I'm not entirely happy with the results on this board, 'cause I have to downsize them to reduce loading times and that introduces some blur on the text...
SAHIB SHIHAB / JAZZ SAHIB / SAVOY / 1957 / JAPANESE CBS/SONY SOPU 37-SY REISSUE LP OF MG 12124 SAHIB SHIHAB - BARITONE SAXOPHONE PHIL WOODS - ALTO SAXOPHONE BENNY GOLSON - TENOR SAXOPHONE BILL EVANS, HANK JONES - PIANO PAUL CHAMBERS, OSCAR PETTIFORD - BASS ART TAYLOR - DRUMS PRODUCED BY OZZIE CADENA. BOB ENEVOLDSEN QUINTET / TAMPA / 1956 / ORIGINAL MONO DEEP GROOVE LP 14 BOB ENEVOLDSEN - TENOR SAXOPHONE, VALVE TROMBONE MARTY PAICH - PIANO, ACCORDION RED MITCHELL - BASS, PIANO DON HEATH - DRUMS LARRY BUNKER - VIBRAPHONE, DRUMS PRODUCED BY ROBERT SCHERMAN. RECORDED BY VAL VALENTIN ON AUGUST 8, 1955.
Beautiful series, but I find this album to be one of the lesser ones musically. And I hate accordion… (or accordeon, as we spell it here)
There's also his album (or rather EP) that was part of that Nocturne Hollywood series. The tracks sounded good, but I felt more drawn towards that slighty more experimental Tampa record... but hey, tastes differ!
Elvin Jones - Genesis (1971) 2015 Blue Note/HDtracks 96/24 with uncredited mastering Elvin Jones - drums Joe Farrell/Dave Liebman - tenor & soprano sax Frank Foster - tenor sax, alto flute, alto clarinet Gene Perla - string bass, electric bass Been hankering to hear this one again for a while. Too hot to fire up my heater radio and turntable to play the MM 45 (which is KING for this title), and anyway, the HDtracks is the best digital mastering of this album I've heard to date, sounds fab. An atypical, piano-less instrument lineup. Moody, mesmerizing, and cathartic. A giant of a date, and a true outlier in the later Blue Note/United Artists-era discography.
More Elvin with: Wayne Shorter - Night Dreamer (1964) 1994 Blue Note/Toshiba EMI Japan TOCJ-4173 "The BN Works" series CD Night Dreamer and Juju were recorded just prior to Wayne joining Miles' second great quintet in the fall of '64 (Miles & crew had been touring with George Coleman and Sam Rivers on sax that summer). The "Etc." as we know is McCoy Tyner on piano, meaning this date is backed by John Coltrane's rhythm section. Every time I see photos of Lee Morgan it makes me want to watch I Called Him Morgan again.
Wayne Shorter, eh? Finally got hold of this one...tonight's commuting music: The title track is probably my favourite here.
Back To Brazil - Klaus Doldinger's Passport (Wounded Bird/Atlantic) CD Dated 2003. Not a bad album, but one I never thought I would ever be listening to! This music is interesting enough and if, like me, you find a copy in the bargains it's probably worth taking a gamble on it. I think it sounds best in the morning.
The Classic Sessions - Hal Stein-Warren Fitzgerald Quintet (Progressive/Solid) CD with Hal Stein (alto & tenor sax), Warren Fitzgerald (trumpet), Bob Dorough (piano), Alphonso Cotton (bass), Paul Motian (drums) Recorded 1955 Reissued by Solid in CD Japan (2016) with 1 bonus alternate take of Bee Dees Blues. Executive producer - Mamoru Ko (Ultra-Vybe) / Mastering - The Real Jazz Tribe Studio Good to see this one getting the Japanese re-issue treatment. These sessions last 79+ minutes and every minute of it is a totally enjoyable listen. * The packaging comes with Obi, and an 8 page booklet (with mainly unreadable Japanese sleeve notes). The front sleeve does not have that compact disc logo on the bottom left corner of image.
