Jack McDuff is on Kirk's Work which is why someone labeled the album soul jazz. McDuff was one of the major creators of that genre. Roland Kirk is certainly a cut above the average soul jazz reed player but he loved playing everything from Burt Baccharach to Coltrane so I doubt he was thinking he was above playing soul jazz. If so then why play with Jack McDuff? He would add some serious dialogue in those tunes!

@macdaddysinfo Congratulations on discovering Rhasan Roland Kirk. You're in for quite a ride and that Mosaic set is a good core collection of his music. There is a good biography on him called Bright Moments if you are so inclined.

I found some nice used jazz title today in Berkeley and they were priced right too. I'll be spinning those after dinner.

Yes, I'm familiar with McDuff and I know full well he played soul jazz. As I said I'm not a Kirk specialist, but I wouldn't label any of his music that I've heard soul jazz; that said, I haven't heard his stuff with McDuff or the Mosaic.

It was only the McDuff album that "someone" on the internet labeledsoul jazz. Sloppy ? Maybe, but it is closer to soul jazz than say, Reeds & Deeds or The Inflated Tear.

FYI it is the only album of his with an organist so you were correct in thinking he isn't a soul jazz artist per se. He just does a good job at masquerading as one. ;)

    Thanks @Six String.

As for music bios... My copy of tingen's "electric miles" should arrive any day now... Looking very much forward to digging into that. Now I just need to find somebody who wants to split the cost of the complete montreaux set with me (and I don't even know if that later stuff is covered in the book; I still want it)...

That's funny, I recently sold the Miles Davis at Montreux (no a :)) set for a relatively low price to a friend of mine, who has a record/CD store here in town.

Well, if wants to flip it, I am in the market... If he wants to keep it and split the price, I am in the market for that, too...

NP Donald Byrd Sextet (Landmark) Orrin Keepnews last label I think. Promo came with a b&w photo and a single sheet bio. $4 in NM condition!
    Band includes
    Kenny Garrett
    Joe Henderson
    Donald Brown
    Peter Washington
    Al Foster

That is some serious talent! Released in 1990. Recorded by RVG and mastered by George Horn. These are the records that are real bargains still to be had. According to the liner notes, Joe Henderson had not worked with Donald Byrd prior to this (1990).

The title of the above album is Getting Down To Business. Byrd has a previous album on Landmark "Harlem Blues."

It's a very good album and a nice example of mixing young and old musicians together to create new music.

NP Donald Byrd with Claire Fischer and Strings (Discovery)
This is one of those buried treasure recordings. A recording made in 1957 with Donald Byrd with string charts written by Claire Fischer and shelved by Warner Brothers. It was released about 25 years later. Byrd's playing is superlative and I have to say the arrangements around him are very well done, this coming from someone who doesn't particularly care for jazz with strings programs. The SQ is excellent as well and this is a small, not exactly audiophile label, but the tapes must have been in nice shape. The strings have a real presence. There are horns and a harp as well so there are more than strings in the arrangement. There are no drums. One of the stand outs on side one is his return to one he absolutely nailed on Royal Flush, I'm A Fool To Want You. I can see why he wanted to do it again. It's a lovely tune full of pathos. If you like that sort of thing.

I finally found a copy of this album today after living with a cdr for about five years. I found it within two minutes of looking in the massive "just Arrived" section at Rasputin's on Telegraph. I thought, no matter what else I find, today has been a good day. Finding used records is all about being in the right place at the right time.

When I posted that I remembering the last time I walked up to that same stack of Just Arrived section and the guy next to me comes upon the McDonald & Giles album (looked like the orig. U.S. pressing), one I've wanted for quite some time. Five or ten minutes and it would have been mine. That's the way ot goes. Today I got an album I'll play more often than the M & G album that I've also had on my list for a long time. You win some and you lose some.

My friend has a record/CD store and he bought it from me with the intention to sell it and make a profit. He may have sold it by now, but if not I have no idea how much he's asking for it and overseas shipping (we're in the Netherlands) is extremely expensive for a heavy set like this.
