Yeah, I'm not a fan of those LT covers either. Talk about a giant fall in presentation. Only a beancounter would think that was a good idea.
System is sounding so good today (and I have been hungry to listen after a few days of little listening). This is the most recent Japanese cd reissue. Sounds excellent.
Jeff "Tain" Watts - Citizen Tain w. Wynton Marsalis (T), Branford Marsalis (TS, SS), Kenny Garrett (AS), Delfeayo Marsalis (Tb), Reginald Veal (B), Kenny Kirkland (P). It occurs to me that of the jazz albums released in the past 15 years or so, Citizen Tain is definitely among the top 10 I listen to. Something about the chemistry between the guys, the telepathy between the brothers, fantastic overall energy, the tragic death of Kirkland (shortly after the release of this disc), the whole enchilada. I love this freaking thing.
Charlie Haden /Gonzalo Rubalcaba - Tokyo Adagio (Impulse) Picked this up on cd the other day in Berkeley. I thought it was an older release but it is a 2005 recording at the Blue Note in Tokyo that Charlie picked out of his collection of tapes and decided it needed to come out. I'm grateful for that. I think I found a new favorite early morning album. My collection of Charlie Haden duo albums continues to grow,
Woody Shaw ~ Blackstone Legacy with Gary Bartz, Bennie Maupin, George Cables, Ron Carter, Clint Houston & Lenny White Recorded 8 and 9, 1970 at A & R studios in New York City Contemporary, 1971
Damn, what a great album. I love how on the track M.D / Lookout Farm Richard Beirach turns into McCoy Tyner about 3/4's of the way in. Forgot how good Frank Tusa was on the bass also. Now time for Timeless. John Abercrombie Timeless
Just spun "Lookout Farm" last Friday night and thoroughly enjoyed it again. and Timeless . . . . is one of my favorite lp's of all time! I mentioned it before but I saw Jack DeJohnnette's Directions with Abercrombie, Holland and Alex Foster in the mid-seventies at a club in Chicago. They ended the show with "Timeless". That evening of music will never leave my mind.
If you've been waiting for all the John Abercrombie Quartet recordings from the late 70's / early 80's to finally come out on CD, they'll be released as a box in November, called "The First Quartet". Likely High Res versions too I would think. (Arcade was released in CD previously in Japan only)
Not sure. I hope the next one they get to bundles up some of Jack DeJohnette's out of print 70's recordings (e.g. Untitled and New Rags)
I'm spinning Miles' "Someday My Prince Will Come" - original 6-eye mono - on my big Rek-O-Kut with the 12" ROK 160 mono arm and GE VR-II mono cartridge, thru the Fisher tubes, and damn does it sound fine!
