The KLF (also known as The Justified Ancients of Mu Mu, furthermore known as The JAMs, The Timelords,The K Foundation)

The legend goes that a pair of producers (drummond & Cauthy) rang up a british radio station in the late 80's to lament on the state of modern music and how easy it had become to get to the top of the modern charts. They decided afterwards to show how easy it was,by doing just that.Easily producing cliched hip-hop ,sampled dance music. They topped the charts in the uk and throughout Europe and had various top 5 singles and albums. Were they being ironic?you bet! But (maybe inadvertently) produced some of the most exciting dance,trance,chill-out music heard in a long time.
They then burnt the million pound they had made from the project on the remote scottish island of Jura and promptly ended the project.

Its probably not all true, but it a great story and it certainly left a legacy of some great music.

They always seemed, to me, like a 'wannabe' Negativland..... only with hits!

Very much a fan of The KLF. Have been ever since they were The Timelords. Doctorin' The Tardis cracked me up and I was hooked.

Highly recommend Chill Out and The White Room. Also The Manual, if you can find it.

I was thinking of contributing to SHF folklore by doing a KLF album-by-album thread. But I don't know if there'd be interest, or if I'd have time.

    I love the KLF.

When I was in college I worked at a Top 40 radio station in Knoxville, TN and we played the crap outta that song. Still love it to this day, I believe it was an extended mix. We used to have a closet full of The White Room on CD that we would give away on air. And yes, they have a great story to tell.

They were great. I will always love "All You Need Is Love" the most. From its insane samples to the Scottishness of the rap (it's definitely the only rap song I've heard that mentions the River Clyde.), it was quite a way to start.

They were the Andy Kauffman of the music world.
I like the music but I love the concepts and humour more I think.
They went out with a bang...

...the KLF have left the music industry.
    God Bless them.

I love the KLF too, coincidentally I just finally picked up a copy of the UK edition of The White Room at a Bull Moose store not too long ago and I'm now feeling motivated to pick up all of the CD singles that I don't already have. Bill Drummond has been a personal hero of mine for many years. In fact, one of my favorite quotes about art & creativity by anyone is from an interview of his a few years back: "Doing art should not be a full time job for the validated few. Doing art should be something we all do as part of everyday life… None of us should be getting our highs and lows vicariously through what other people do, we should all do the fighting, kicking, loving, f&%#ing, painting, throwing, jumping, killing, singing, shouting ourselves, and not have actors, sportsmen, musician or artists doing it for us."

And another thing: if there were no KLF, there would be no "Doctor Who on Holiday," and we can't have that! --

And no KLF thread can be complete without their legendary "performance" at the 1992 Brit Awards:

I'm surprised 'sports stadiums' don't play "Doctorin' The Tardis" instead of "Rock N Roll Part 2"!

I don't know much of their stuff, but Justified and Ancient is awesome (a word I use rarely). It's made my day to have been reminded of it and hear it again from the link above.

It may have been easy for them, but I can assure you that there were many trying to get to the top of the charts and not succeeding.
