Barry Lyndon. I never realized, or had forgotten, that Kubrick ends Barry's story with a FREEZE-FRAME of him getting into a carriage. Wow, how 'seventies, Stanley! I was shocked. The master succumbs to a visual cliche of popular culture at the time at the end of his epic period piece!

The Treasure of Sierra Madre (1948).
A classic John Huston movie that still holds up today. Just a great story masterfully told - and endlessly poignant, to boot.

  12. Not sure off the top of my head. I actually wasn't aware there were unrated cuts available. The Never Sleep Again documentary showcases the extended death scenes from part 5, but I don't recall anything else mentioned about the others being cut. It was a long marathon so I'm kind of hazy. I'll look into it though. And to clarify I bought the UK set.

    Ok, thanks! I appreciate it.

  14. In the meantime I HIGHLY recommend the documentary Never Sleep Again. So in-depth, so much fun!

Seems the usual: the older formats (VHS & LD) probably slipped through with some unrated cuts, but the newer formats simply carried on distributing cut versions. Though to be fair the only extensive cuts I know of are from part 5, and the footage exists in documentaries and perhaps youtube clips.

WE ALWAYS LIE TO STRANGERS - Interesting documentary about Branson, Missouri, focussing on a few of the performing families who've
become institutions there, the city's mayor, and some young performers struggling to make it.

    The Transporter.

Good grief, what a pile of crap! I got to 20 minutes before the end, turned it off and returned it to the DVD store.
