I'd imagine the network wants him to keep up as best as he can with the high energy of his competitor Fallon. They've already one-upped Fallon by starting the show off immediately with Stephen's entrance. The theme and intro comes after the brief monologue. The dancing--which appears to be something Stephen enjoys doing---seems to be another way to revitalize the format. This isn't your grandfather's late night show.....

My wife was showing me a clip from Fallon's show last night, and I gotta say, his set is wayyyyy better than Colbert's. Just so much classier and actually feels like a late night talk show. I almost feel like they each have completely the opposite sets that you'd expect them to and they could swap.

I have the complete opposite opinion, but that may be because I'm still in awe of the newly uncovered dome in the theater.

The dome would be nicer if it didn't have Colbert's face all over it. I was sort of baffled by that because it seemed like something the "Colbert" character would do, not the "real" Colbert.

True, but his face isn't always over it. A few times, it was just a starry sky and looked really beautiful.

I think the guests he had on The Colbert Report were an indication of the types of guests he normally likes to interview...leaning more towards authors, politicians, scientists, and the like... with less focus on "celebrity" types. Celebrities go with the territory of having a network talk show, however, so he's going to do his best to have fun with those interviews. Otherwise the interviews turn into a session where the celebrity tells a well-rehearsed story of something that happened to them, carefully crafted for maximum audience reaction.

Funnily, my original post had the word revitalize in quotes. I don't think such things really bring anything new to the format either but there are people out there that will label it as such.

Conan's been doing the goofy dancing thing since, what, the mid '90s?

How dour do you guys want this show to be? Heaven forbid Colbert might crack a joke, say something ironic or look like he's enjoying himself.

I thaught ending the show in the middle of the song ruined an otherwise excellent Pearl Jam performance

Or tivo the show and fast forward through the parts you don't like. For me it's the opening dance, the entertainment personalities and the bands I don't like...

You can find about 50,000 videos on youtube of PJ playing that song. People really need one more?

It was on, I watched it, and I liked it. Never heard the first song before. I don't jump on youtube for Pearl Jam songs, kinda got tired of them. Thanks for the heads up I guess. I don't know, do people need one more?

I thought the continuous run of pope jokes became too much and I'm not catholic.

Yeah, some people want him to be like a slightly looser Charlie Rose.

I'm fine with a combination of Charlie Rose and a Radio City Rockette.
