Some of the folks at the Allman Brothers Band thread thought this would be a good idea since Skynyrd's music is in the Southern Rock vein and they were influenced by the Allman Brothers Band.

Skynyrd became the embodiment of "Southern Rock" to many musicians and fans....even more so than the Allmans and other bands that formed around the early 70s. Skynyrd were IMO, one the reasons Southern Rock exploded in the 70s. I am sure many will agree with me. The band's genesis occurred in 1966 in Jacksonville, Florida when buddies Allen Collins, Ronnie Van Zant and Gary Rossington formed a band. The band went through some name changes until 1969 when Ronnie came up with the name Leonard Skinnerd. The name was a mock/joke of their Phys Ed instructor in High School that supposedly busted their onions for having long hair. Later in 1970, they decided to cut ole' Leonard a break and they settled on the name which we all know them by. They gigged incessantly at the start of the 70s and in 1972, Al Kooper caught a gig of theirs in Atlanta. Kooper was duly impressed and signed them to his newly formed "Sounds of the South" label. However, the band recorded many of the songs that would wind up on their debut earlier with Jimmy Johnson and Tim Smith at Muscle Shoals Studio in Alabama in 1971. Those recordings were shelved after they failed to be picked up by a label the band thought might be a good match.

In March 1973, the band begun sessions for their first album with Al Kooper producing. Their debut was released in September of 1973.

Wait! What about Michelle & Need All My Friends on Shade Tree? :)

I know it was finally released on Collectybles but the '45 was released first. And I was reissued after the crash, I believe.

I forgot about that. It was released in 1968. I thought it was shelved. I will start with that.

The original core of Lynyrd Skynyrd—Ronnie Van Zant, Bob Burns, Gary Rossington, Allen Collins and Larry Junstrom—first came together under the name "My Backyard" back in 1964.

Of all the bands I grew up listening to, and of all the bands that came from the south in the 1970s, disband the ranks number two. It's no mystery whom number one is for me, but the original band sure could rock like nobody's business.

No Sir, not personally. I never even thought about Skynyrd 45s until they were brought to my attention. My thinking switched to albums only, around late 1972, after moving to Tennessee from Chicago, where 45s were my focus from 1964-1972. By 1974, when a toking buddy turned me on to Second Helping, it was a purchase of it, and Pronounced, both on Kooper's Sounds Of The South label, until 8 tracks came into the picture in 1976, with my first car. From then on, it was usually an album / 8 track purchase. One for the apartment, one for the vehicle.

I have a few copies of the reissue kicking around somewhere. It's a brown label.
