Semi-interesting cast for this, at least. Certainly don't expect it to approach the original, but it could be entertaining. Antoine Fuqua is directing, and has given some detail about how the cast corresponds to the original.

    Chris Pratt (Steve McQueen)
    Denzel Washington (Yul Brynner)
    Ethan Hawke (Robert Vaughn)
    Vincent D'Onofrio (Charles Bronson)
    Byung-hun Lee (James Coburn)
    Peter Sarsgaard
    Vinnie Jones
    Haley Bennett

Sarsgaard is apparently the villain. Plot seems to have changed from rescue-Mexican-farmers to rescue-damsels-in-distress. Release date is September 23rd.

For some reason "The Seven Samurai" or the "M7" (funniest shorthand ever) never resonated that much with me. I think I like the 7S better, slightly better, though. Although I've never liked the stock Japanese character of the worshipful young apprentice who seems to weep and scream all the time out of reverence: "Say it ain't so, Master!"

    "True Grit" remake.

Edit: I see others have already pointed this out.

This doesn't bother me. The original never did much for me, and neither tid "Seven Samurai". I like other Kurosawa films much more. This story has been re-told many times in different guises. The 80's Roger Corman space flick "Battle Beyond The Stars" is one example.

A tree is better than Robert Vaughn too. When I saw the list I immediately said, huge upgrade having Ethan Hawk play Robert Vaughn's roll.
    So let's call it a horse a piece. :D

I don't know what to make of this one. Maybe they will follow the path of Django Unchained which stayed away from the original Django story. I almost dreaded seeing Django Unchained because I was afraid of what Tarantino would do to the original. I was happy that he steared clear. Maybe this will be another story that can stand on its own.

I will say again, I would have thought the same about the True Grit remake, and it was fantastic.

This may very well be dreadful, but I will reserve judgment.

I don't have qualms about the film, it's a good story. Been told several times already with the earlier M7 movies. Great director. I would have picked a different cast though. Let's see..Woody Harrelson,Keanu Reeves,Vin Diesel,Nic Cage,Samuel L Jackson,Justin Bieber,Kurt Russell.

I would've liked to see Javier Bardem (sic) play against type as the leader of the crew.

Denzel doesn't usually make a bad film so I'm interested.

I've always thought they should acknowledge that the original was a pretty definitive Western take on the subject, and instead move it somewhen else.

Suppose a modern Mexican town is threatened by a drug cartel that plans to hang all of the men and boys from lamp-posts a la Sicario, and so the townsfolk club together to hire some former Blackwater mercenaries; or suppose a village in Afghanistan has been left to the mercy on the Taliban, but some former servicemen who spent time there and kept in touch with the locals via Facebook decide to help out, etc.

The basic story is just a framework - a bunch of professionals set out to do a job because they're men, dammit, and they don't back down, even though the rewards are paltry and the risks are high. Like The Wild Bunch but set in a universe compatible with heroism.
