Even with them the movies sucked (See: the sequels, which were some of the most pretentious pieces of crap I've ever seen).

I think not. The sequels were awful and that's what people remember.

I think Avatar is the latest movie that drew audiences to the theatre because of the effects. Matrix did that too, almost ten years before.

I don't think new movies can lure people out because of thrilling effects. That ship has sailed. So what will be the point of a new Matrix?

It's the only one of the three worth remembering.

The MATRIX series is Case Study One in how science fiction franchises tend to make less and less sense the more their particular concept is trotted out and expanded.

It doesn't help that it was created by a pair of nutbags with their heads way up their butts with their philosophical gibberish.

Wow, what do you really think? The first movie was excellent and a landmark in many ways. It has influenced many other filmmakers and copycats. Unfortunately, Hollywood success demands sequels to extract ever drop of profit before the property is run into the ground, which is what happened with the sequels. But that doesn't detract from the original film in any way.

The original has a lot of the nonsense in it too- it's all pseudo-intellectual stuff meant to make the story (which is really pretty simple) into something "deep" and "meaningful". It's just that they ramped it up to 10 in the sequels.

Yeah well, Star Wars fans said that and ask them how well that worked out. :)

Ironically, going in to 1999, Star Wars fans thought what they wanted was "The Phantom Menace" and later discovered that what they really wanted was 'The Matrix"..
