I posted a question about More Of The Monkees on the Rhino forum, and got an unexpected answer:
    Hi Andrew,
I was listening to the MOTM Deluxe set today, and I came up with a couple of questions:
I noticed that all of the songs from this set all have, at some time, had a stereo version except for I'll Be Back Upon My Feet. I was wondering why this song never had a stereo mix made- are the elements of the mix lost, only a mono master available?
Also, You did great stereo mixes for the bonus tracks of I'm A Believer, and Look Out( Here Comes Tomorrow- Much better than the original Stereo mixes, which were a mono backing track with some percussion and vocals mixed into the stereo picture. The same is true of the original stereo mixes of Hold On Girl, Sometime In The Morning and Laugh. Is there any chance that remixes can be made of these songes in the same way? It's a shame that these 3 songs sound so faux- stereo.
Thanks in advance for any answers you can provide.

    Bob T

    Andrew Sandoval's reply:
The multi-tracks for "I'll Be Back Up On My Feet" (version one) are currently MIA.

Get ready for some great sounding More Of The Monkees surround sound remixes in the very near future!

All I can say is :agree: WOW:goodie:

Did I miss something? Where was the hit version of I'M A BELIEVER remixed, or are we talking about the alternate vocal?

Alt vocal, but the music was totally remixed. As much as I like the hit version's vocals, I like the remix much better ( I can overlook the vocals for the superior mix).

Ah, OK.....Yeah, I have to agree that the phonics of the alternate track are indeed pretty damn good!

Although I have to go HUH with the idea of more Monkees issues after the fact that these deluxe editions are coming out. Don't get me wrong...I love the guys, but how many more issues are we going to have to buy?

I need a better paying job! :realmad:

Of all of the albums that could get the surround treatment, More Of The Monkees would be my first choice. The sound of the album is just plain awful from the original mixes, and a remix in surround using the multitracks could be a real sonic revelation for this album.

So what you're saying is that a new mix of "The Day We Fall In Love" will make it more listenable?

    (Sorry Bob...just kidding with ya! :p )

My hope is that they will not limit this to just that one album. PAC&J, or Head in surround is almost too much to dream about!!!!

Too bad that MOM is one of their weakest albums.

It'll probably just be a quad LP, badly warped and pressed off center, shipped in a flimsy bubble mailer OR cardboard packaging that's too small. But the good thing is that it will be free if you pay full retail for the next deluxe edition.

In all seriousness, Monkees in surround sound doesn't interest me. Especially on this album since I prefer it in mono. I'd rather have them spend the time pulling out some more unreleased material. Oh well, it's not like the fans should have any influence on what we get.

I don't think Rhino would issue a new disc of MOTM in surround sound. Maybe Andrew is developing the download section of the site that we heard about a while ago. So my guess is that there will be "surround sound" mixes available as downloads. Hopefully the sound-bytes from the interview series will be available as full downloads also. :goodie:

Well, to be honest, some of the wackier tunes in the canon like SHORTY BLACKWELL or TAPIOCA TUNDRA, or even the PAC&J Moog cuts, might actually sound kinda cool in 5:1...

But I agree with Nomadic in the fact that I just don't think Monkees-In-Surrond-Sound is much of a musical priority.

Let me put it this way and try not to get too gushy about it. The idea of a 5.1 PAC&J would be Heaven for me. I'll take any surround Monkees I can get.

What do you suppose would be the surround spectrum of a song like: I'M A BELIEVER?

    Track one: Music
    Track two: Vocal
    Track three: BG vocals
    Track four: handclaps

I can't imagine what this could be in surround; a very off balance mix.

Well, to be fair, they did locate the multi-tracks for the music for IAB, and they were used on the alternate vocal version we got on the 2CD set of MOTM, so we will get a little more of a spectrum than what you wrote, but yeah...I still can't see it being that spectacular. Kinda like some of the tracks from The Doors Quad Greatest Hits LP or the early tracks from The Grass Roots Quad Hits Disc.....you can't do very much with very little.

ugh, that would be a tough one. My first attempt would be:

Music in FL & FR, slight (20%) bleed to the rears
Vocal in C, slight bleed to FL & FR
BG vocals 15% FL, 15% FR, 35% SL and 35% SR
    Handclaps in rears.

also, no added reverb or "ambience", nothing more than on the original mix.

Steve - they have all the work parts for IAB, except for the final vocal tracks...but luckily they have a multi with an alternate vocal. So the mix would be a lot more compliacted than that. The acoustic guitar, organ, drums and bass...they all exist as seperate tracks.
