According to a Facebook group post, someone already got their set and "Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin On" has been cut from the 33 1/3 RPMonkees medley due to rights issues.
Several sets are noted on FB as arriving damaged. And a blatant edit of the 33 1/3 special? HOW IS THAT EVEN ALLOWED?!?!? The look on the Monkees' faces below says it all. What a "definitive" set......
How is the edit allowed? The question asked should be "why were the rights not be able to be obtained."
Why not raise the price? It's already sitting at two bills, what's another $20 at this point? I guess Rhino couldn't strike a Killer deal... Don't know what to say about the damage to the box. I'm sure someone does and will address it with somebody at Warner. I hope the bonus disc is as good as I want it to be. Bring the spoilers or point me in their direction...
I'm assuming they can exchange it due to the damage. I wonder if the rights holders for the "Whole Lot of Shakin' Goin' on" segment flat out said no. Otherwise I wonder why they would be astronomical in their fee for this release of all releases? I can't imagine the team putting this together being wanting to have to edit it out.
John Hughes confirmed on FB that the rights to "Shakin'" were not available at any price. They were simply flatly turned down.
Makes you almost wish it wasn't in the original to begin with if they knew they were going to have problems with it later.
He was asked whether the rights were too expensive in a thread on Zilch! on FB. He said that they got "Just a flat denial".
This should have definitely been mentioned earlier. Too bad I sold my Season 2 DVD set in anticipation of this.
Sorry to hear about the edit. Very disappointed in that regard, but I still have the first DVD and vhs sets so I still have the complete 33 & 1/3 special at least.
You're right. Seems kinda ****y that they obviously knew about the edit, but neglected to mention it at any time before now. Is there a disclaimer on the box stating that the contents are "not originally as aired"?
I guess I don't understand.....JLL was paid back in '69 to appear and I would imagine the contract stated that the use of the rebroadcast and any other construct would be at the discretion of the owner of the tape, not the owner of the song/copyright. I can't see how this would stand in court....but I am sure somehow it would.....I just want to better understand it.
