Costello has a lot of 'em:
    No Action
    Accidents Will Happen
    Beyond Belief (maybe my favorite)
    Uncomplicated

Another personal favorite is "plainsong" off the Cure's Disintegration.

Not sure if it is "the most powerful first track...ever..." but "Respectable Street" kicking of the mighty Black Sea spurred a life-long addiction to XTC--which is no bad thing in my book.

    "My,My, Hey, Hey"

in a neat trick, the electric version deserves consideration for most powerful closing track.

James Gang Rides Again, "Funk 49" has to be up there for me. Great song and the opening switching from one stereo channel to another blew my headphone listening 15 year old mind!

Sat In Your Lap off the Kate Bush's album The Dreaming. The pounding, insistent drums made her intentions abundantly clear.

Kate herself has called this her "She's gone mad" album. If so, the line between genius and madness is even thinner than we thought.

Turn Up the Night on Black Sabbath The Mob Rules. Maybe not the best song but I find it very powerful. The riff sounds titanic and has a sick chugging groove. Some of the songs others listed are great songs but don't strike me as powerful as the original poster asked for.

OR Fight Fire with Fire, from Ride the Lightning. Both are absolute full frontal sonic assaults.

  20. Not sure about the connotations of the word "powerful" in this thread, but still want to share what in my opinion are the best debut tracks ever:

I'm OK with Thunder Road, but I'll take the one on Live 1975-85 instead.

I gotta go with School on COTC.
