It's a cool collection but far from definitve. Only one of those songs was a hit ("Do Leme ao Pontal", but a different, later version), even though he had several.

It would be great if a label like Light in the Attic reissued at least his first four records, like they did with those early '70s Marcos Valle LPs.

Such a larger-than-life musical genius, criminally unknown out of Brazil...

YES!!! I would like that as well because I'm sure this comp only scratches the surface of his greatness. I am very pleased with it for what it is though. That last 12 minute cut is KILLER!

Listened to Cassiano and Ed Motta today.

Ed Motta is more diverse and inventive, but in the end of the day I liked Cassiano album more.
No idea why the title 'Cuban Soul', any suggestions?

Interestingly, there's an out-of-print Cassiano compilation CD with track selection, annotation and liner notes by Ed Motta!

As for "Cuban Soul", from the original liner notes:

"On this LP, Cassiano tries to create a new rhythm, named "cuban soul", based on the universality of the music and his mixing it with Brazilian roots".

Good news for Brazilian misic lovers:
Universal Japan announced new batch of [Brasil 1000] series, scheduled for release in June 2015.
120 CDs to be released simultaneously.

I can see the complete list at CDJapan:
    Brazil 1000 listed at CDJapan

Many names are familiar to me, a few albums I already have, but most of the albums I did not hear in their entirety.
Gotta do some googling to narrow down a feasible wish list (my main focus is soul & funk influenced MPB).

Gil e Jorge and Gilberto Gil'71 are my instant choises, and then some research is needed.

    Those two are great!

For other soul/funk-influenced MPB from that list I'd recommend these:

Marcos Valle - Previsão do Tempo (his funkiest album)
João Donato - Lugar Comum (featuring Gilberto Gil!)
    Jorge Ben - Africa Brasil
    Trio Mocotó - Muita Zorra!
    Orlandivo - Orlandivo

I just hope this series isn't mastered super loud like some other recent Japanese reissues...

Gotta check these albums; I've heard other albums by the first 3, but not these.
Africa Brasil I have, and it's one of my favorite Brasilian albums.

I'd be interested in any thoughts about the earlier-recorded items on the Japan list, the early, lesser-known Elenco discs, for example. Any hidden gems there?

I just played the Best of comp yesterday. I wish they would release the box set here or at least sell it.

The "Brasil 1000" series must be a big hit because they are re-pressing stuff that came out last summer like this Donato CD. I wish the Japanese or somebody would reissue that massive Jorge Ben box from a few years back. I can't find it anywhere.

BIG thanks for posting these O Terço albums southamorican! I was able to snag the first three from ebay and a few other places. The CDs must be out of print or something cause they were really tough to find at a decent price. That first one was cheap but the third one was kinda pricey. I had to have it though just for that wicked cover!

You're welcome! Glad you like them!

Yes, albums 3-5 have been out of print for a while, such a shame...

There's another one that's worth getting though, and shouldn't be very hard to find, on Discobertas, same label that reissued the first two. It's a 1971 4-song EP with three extra tracks, which makes for a cool album-length CD they named 'Tributo ao Sorriso', after one of the bonus tracks. The cover is the same as the original EP:

If anyone is interested Goma Gringo Discos in Brazil has released Tribo Massahi " Estrelando Embaixador". This is the 1st legitimate reissue of the early 70's Funk/Soul album.

I don't know if it's a limited run but, it is currently available from Dusty Groove, Amazon and Discogs.

Walter Wanderly's The Rain Forest is a good atmospheric album for a rainy day.
