Now listening to Lenine - Na Pressão.
Still a shock nearly 20 years after being released, I highly recommend listening to this wonderful melting-pot, so many influences masterfully mixed.

Since this is the most active Brazilian topic, I have a question here:
Does anyone have recent reissues of Tim Maia (4 albums) and Jorge Ben (2 albums) on Oficial Arquivos label?
How is the mastering quality on CDs?
Is it Brazilian release or international (I can see pictures of the tray insert with main info in English and copyright info in Portuguese)?

I avoid Polysom like the plague. They have admitted to mastering their releases aiming at consumers with low end/briefcase-style turntables. And that price is absurd!

    Really essential, IMHO.

A tocar agora (I'm sure that is awful, incorrect Portuguese, and please forgive me if I wrote something obscene--Lon, it's all your fault! ;))

    Milton Nascimento, Geraes (1976).

Many of my favourite Brazilian songs of the Seventies on that album: "Volver a los 17," the duo with Chico Buarque "O Que Sera," "Lua Girou," etc.

I've been enjoying the music of Thais Morell lately. She is a wonderful singer and acoustic guitarist.

Scott, I didn't know Thais M. at all before your post. I just watched a few clips on YouTube, and I agree with you: wonderful! Very, very pleasant music. Thanks. :agree:

That's how they say it... in Portugal!

In Brazil people would say tocando agora and estou ouvindo.

By the way, estou ouvindo the new Tribalistas album. Yes, they're back.

    Muito obrigado, southamorican!

And I didn't know Monte, Brown, and Antunes had a new record out, 15 years after their first one. I'll try to listen to it ASAP. Thanks for the heads-up!

I am terribly old school when it comes to music, any genre, so estou ouvindo Jorge Ben, "Filho Maravilha," (or "Fio") from the Seventies:

This song is about a Brazilian football player, is that right? (What we would call a soccer player in my neck of the woods, I think. But what do I know, up here, in hockey land :))

    Yes, this guy:

He wasn't a skilled player but Flamengo fans, such as Jorge, loved him for his grit. Unfortunately, he later sued Ben for using his (nick)name, that's why he changed it to "Filho".

It's such a brilliant song. Ben had the knack for writing about football like no one else. His other football classics are "Umbabarauma", "Camisa 10 da Gávea" (a tribute to Zico) and "Zagueiro", but he mentions the game in many other songs.

I might be cheating a little bit, but I'll post this anyway, because I miss David:

Seu Jorge, The Life Aquatic (2005). Soundtrack to the Wes Anderson movie.

EDIT: I think I should specify that the songs on that album are acoustic Portuguese versions of David Bowie's songs. Which he really liked, BTW.

    And since I'm cheating anyway...

Un homme et une femme 1966 - Samba Saravah par Seidrik - Dailymotion

An excellent moment in a great French movie, Un Homme et Une Femme, Claude Lelouch (1966). The actor-singer is Pierre Barouh (who passed away last year). The song was written by Vinicius de Moraes and Baden Powell, if I remember correctly. Barouh wrote the French lyrics.

One of my mother's favourite movies. So it became one of mine, I guess.
