This is not a "true" Brazilian album - it's definitely an export product (similar to e.g. Sepultura or Angra).

So? My intent was not to limit this thread to "true Brazilian music."

I counted to about 25 myself... But yeah, there are some conspicuous absences. No Caetano's White Album? Nothing at all by Marcos Valle? Maybe he's not that big in Brazil? Some strange selections too; Gal Costa's top-ranked album is A Todo Vapor, a live recording with less-than-stellar sound quality.

No Valle is incredible. No Nara, either. No Edu Lobo. No Joyce. Gismonti barely squeaks in at #100. No Buarque I-IV...

Yeah, Nara Leão is another conspicuous absence... But on reflection, it may have something to do with her albums being a bit uneven. Her album output also kind of dried up in the late '60s/early '70s period, when a lot of her contemporaries produced their most prolific work. And her semi-experimental album from that period, Coisas do mundo, is not that successful to my ears - although it has some gems.

This is probably my favourite album of hers, Vento do Maio:

This one has become something of a soundtrack for the summer of '13, as remastered in DSD by Seigen Ono for Bomba Records: imagesCAOFHBCB.jpg

One of my late discoveries in Brazilian music is the guitarist Baden Powell. I was first introduced to his music by a friend who gave me a couple of cdrs but I came across some lps later on and in fact was listening to one of my favorites, Solitude on Guitar a Dutch pressing on CBS. I also found L'Art de Baden Powell on Festival (Spanish pressing) and Le Genie de Baden Powell also on the Festival label. His lps are not easy to find so I usually buy them on sight.

Jorge Ben is another less obvious choice that I discovered through David Byrne's Brazilian compilations. If you're looking for some introductions to the music those compilations are worth picking up.

Lonson introduced me to a beautiful album by Paula and Jaques Morelenbaum and Ryuichi Sakamoto, Casa which is absolutely gorgeous music. One of my favorite albums of its type since I discovered Baden Powell. So thanks Lonson!

    n.b., "bossa" does not mean "beat" . . .

I'm aware. A Brazilian friend of mine refers to it that way, and Samba she calls "the old beat," and that has just stuck in my mind as the term, wrongly.

I didn't know they had more. Well there goes more money out the door. Ha!

This a.m. I played another Baden Powell lp on the Festival label, L'Art de Baden Powell. Many years ago I was having a pint at my favorite brewpub (Rubicon) talking to the owner of a local popular live music club and he brought up Baden Powell's name and he was surprised that I knew of him. He said you're the first person I've ever talked to fit hat knew who he was.

I'm not familiar with that album you posted by him. Is it solo or a group setting?
