If you're going to do satire, you need to find a subject that is trite, tired and super-serious to satirize. The Gong Show WAS a satire.
Maybe in some bizarre oh-so-heavy French/Euro way, a satire of a satire is really clever.

    Count me out.

Last nights show was much better. Best of the season thus far. These are the kinds of silly acts they should be focused on. Other weeks everything was too professional. I also prefer to watch the show at 10 so Im glad they moved it back.

    Pun not intended....?

Yes, I agree with your assessment:
“...the viewing experience changed from "watching a silly game show reboot" to "watching a bizarre performance art piece."

Unfortunately, the cameraman seemed to be a big Gene Gene the Dancing Machine fan...

This is the first time i'm hearing about it.

I absolutely loved the original Chuck Barris show back in the 70s. The show got crazier and crazier, which made it great. A half-an-hour of absolute craziness.

I'll have to check out the new show. If it's as crazy as the original, i'm in! But, no one could be as zany as Chucky Baby!

I watched it for the first time last night, and did not know who it was until I looked it up on IMDB. What's the story there? He's not imitating Barris. Is he imitating someone else? If so, how does it relate to the original show?

I watched last night just because Alyson Hannigan was on. Good Lord, but does she ever need to land a regular job again. Will Arnett was occasionally funny and the acts were better than what I recall from the Chuck Barris/Gary Owens days but I was left pretty cold by Mike Myers. Honestly, I found the whole thing rather puzzling more than actually entertaining.

At least Alyson has the Penn and Teller gig. She seems like a nice person, and she is supremely cute.

After you do, let us know what you think - I’m curious to hear all opinions.

What’s interesting is how many approach this new version -
obviously, the “lightning-in-a-bottle” magic of the original show can’t - and shouldn’t - be attempted to be replicated.
(How dull, boring, predictable, redundant, repetitious, and just plain ill-advised would that be?)

However, since it IS the same show, in name, it obviously carries some of the same attributes.

I sense that many expect that “once in a lifetime” anomaly to happen again.
Folks, you can’t be surprised twice.

Just like other entertainment franchises that underwent relaunching - Batman, Star Wars, Star Trek, Doctor Who, Planet of the Apes, etc, this show, much more obscure and smaller in relative scale - needed something new added to the mix, to make the reboot worthwhile.

So far, “the spin” on this reboot is very interesting to me. I’m willing to see how the shows pans out.

Or, if IT gets “GONGed” by the network.

Penn and Teller have a summer show called Fool Us. Other magicians appear on it and P&T try to guess how they did their trick.
    She hosts the show.

I saw the first four or five acts last night and was entertained. Then I had to go and get a pizza. No, I didn't but it's a decent gag. Maitland seemed more on form. I still hate the back-stage cut-aways or cut-ins, whatever they call them... too America's Got Talent, not Gong Show. Did suitcase pantomime guy win or the dancing cows? I really did have to leave before things wound up.

I'm not watching it because the old Gong Show was annoying and I still remember it.

At times it seemed to me he was trying to imitate Robin Williams. At other times he seemed to be imitating Tony Clifton.

I love that show! Great fun, and P&T get to kick-start the careers of new/unknown magicians.

Penn is so effusive in his praise. He even tells the 'losers' all these compliments and props.
Someone more cynical than I has suggested he does this, because they gather some acts together and sell it as a 'magic variety show' to clubs and casinos, but I have never seen any proof of that.

Maybe...or maybe he's mellowing in his old age, and just wants to give new talent a leg up.
