I'm not into their style but what I always felt was that whenever they start singing all the metal disappears. The songs start metal and then singing ruins it for me not only as not being metal but what I consider awful vocals regardless of style. Does that make sense? I guess they are in the metal tree but not one I explored much because I don't like that style at all. I don't like every band in any sub-genre (who does?)but take, like let's say black metal, I like it enough (love certain bands) to explore it in depth and seek out new bands. Never did that with Korn and others in that style so I am far from an expert.

I agree his vocals are polarizing, although I think he is drastically better on the last two albums compared to the early stuff. The one before the last was really melodic (for that style).

Just curious what we would call it if not metal? Alternative?

Korn is alternative metal. They're definitely a metal band but incorporate hip-hop and funk into their sound. I've always thought of them as a metal band.

Thanks to @dmiller458 for sharing those lists. Might not agree with a couple of picks but it's fun to read and get the sense of enthusiasm for the music from guys like Taylor and Ulrich. Especially where I do like the same album, their thoughts are right on target with mine.

Would love to see a blindfold test with some of these musicians as well, similar to the ones so prevalent in jazz interviews. The immediacy of their reactions to the song they might or might not know would make for great reading.

Those quotes were taken out of context, sir :).

The question was posed about Korn and I answered it.

"Well, I don't consider them to be metal, man!"

You say who cares when it comes to LC and RATM, I say that point applies when it comes to Korn as well. It's 20 years after the fact. Whether I consider (weasel word alert!) them metal might have mattered in the 90s. It doesn't matter in 2017.

PS - Quiet Riot...the very definition of Heavy Metal...I can understand not liking them, but to say they weren't metal?

Just stumbled on this and thought it may be of interest:

    Gimme Radio Gimme Radio
    WHAT IS GIMME RADIO?

Gimme Radio is a streaming radio station hosted by hand-selected DJs -- DJs who pick all of the music we play, who live and breathe metal, who are just as metal-obsessed as us. Gimme Radio DJs are musicians, label owners, producers, artists, and music journalists, but most importantly; they're metalheads, just like you. Like great radio in the past, Gimme Radio doesn't ask for a subscription fee. And unlike some online music services, Gimme Radio doesn't play ****ty audio ads. We believe in supporting artists by buying their music, wearing their t-shirts, and going to their shows. We believe that digital music has stripped the love from music. Gimme Radio is putting your passion for music front and center.

    WHY JUST METAL?

Don’t you worry, young children of men. Metal is the beginning. Metal is one of the most ignored genres on the other music platforms. We think metal is vital, complex and deserves a strong voice. In the future, we will add more stations - each celebrating an underserved and often neglected type of music. If you love Gimme Radio and want to see your favorite genre - email us

I have been on a metal kick lately and been buying quite a few metal CDs. I wanted to see how the latest Armored Saint Live CD was reviewed and was struck by how many metal only review/news sites there are that I didn't know about.

Does anyone have any favorites they can recommend?

Oh and regarding the Armored Saint...it got quite a few great reviews so I grabbed it this morning and am really happy with it. John Bushs vocals are still really strong.
