I keep coming back to this one, that has to mean something. But the more I play it the more I'm unsure what to call it: heavy metal, hard rock, stoner, just rock ? Well, who cares. Gonna play it one more time tomorrow.
Finally got a chance to listen to this. The guitar and drumming are top notch. Love the time changes and the lyrics rise above the usual cheddar. But it's that jazzy-@$$ bass that grabs me in every song. Gul durn.
I think the sludge and drone tags are a bit more specific to certain kinds of bands, honestly. Doom/stoner (and maybe even prog, to be honest.) would fit them well.
Hope you've enjoyed it. This guy makes nice reviews on metal albums. And he considered "reflections of a floating world" really close to a perfect-album. Doom, stoner... Not saying that those are minor styles... But I think this album is just a bit more evolved than that. I even hear a bit of Pink Floyd there. Bottom line - a great one IMO regardless the style.
Interesting. I was a big metalhead in high school and it was practically all I listened to in the early 00s. But then I started branching out musically in my 20s and became more of an indie and experimental rock guy. So when I started listening to heavier styles again the more progressive and post-rock/metal styles were more appealing than the usual cookie cooker traditional formulas. Gojira's a good example of a band that I probably would have hated in high school but love in my 30s.
I'm not really averse to the progressive metal or post-rock/metal at all. I just find From Mars to Sirius to be really boring compared to the more diverse The Way of All Flesh, which had come out afterwards. I'm not the biggest Gojira fan though.
Can this be nominated for a great metal song, which happens to have one of the worst (and cheesy) music videos?
New single and Ontario tour: Canadian 90’s Rockers SVEN GALI 25th Anniversary Ontario Tour + New Single “Kill The Lies”
Are there any thrash/metal bands today who play much in the style of '80s thrash, who weren't around back then? Let's say a Ride the Lightning/Master of Puppets, Among the Living, Peace Sells...But Who's Buying kind of sound? I guess I'm wondering if all new metal carries that 2000s sheen, or do some play in the Golden Age of thrash style?
