This has bothered me for years. All the lyrics sites have this:

All around there are girls and boys
It's a swingin' place, a cellar full of noise
It's got an atmosphere of it's own somehow
You gotta come along right now 'cause I tell you

I swear she is NOT singing the words in bold. It sounds to me more like "That must be Robert soul somehow", which of course makes no sense.

Does anyone here know what she's actually singing in this line?

Well I had 5 minutes spare so I played it on my iPhone and it’s sounds just like it’s written to me.
It very clear too , not sure if we are playing a different recording though.

    peace and love✌Dave

She sounds like she's actually singing the line in bold:

  4. Hey Vinyl Man

Hey Vinyl Man Another bloody Yank down under...

I've never heard anything but the line as printed.

Clearly she says, "I buried Paul."

I hope Pet had better English grammar than to sing the line as written. It's clearly "its own" in this case, not "it's own." :D

Ms. Clark was much better to understand in her enunciation than, say, Ellie Goulding . . . and "I Know A Place" was no exception.

The world needs more singers like that and more songs like that. Well-annunciated, nothing flashy or showboaty, just live in that melody and tell that story. Let the music sparkle around you.

Makes me sad how the world of that song is gone for good.

Sorry, but I hear the line as written as clear as a bell.

I remember a DJ remarking after playing this song how banal and unglamorous the line 'Then you go downstairs to some tables and chairs' sounded: like it was a dusty office storeroom or something. Still love the song though!

It is clearly "it's got an atmosphere of it's own somehow".

I have always loved Petula's version, but it REALLY swings on this version by Sammy Davis Jr.

So everyone is fine with the intro being the same as the theme from Sesame Street? Ok then.

You mean the theme from Sesame Street is the same as 'I Know A Place' surely?

As already mentioned, I Know a Place came out first (1965, four years before Sesame Street).

    There isn’t any ‘mystery’.
She is clearly singing the lyrics as printed.

As already explained, "I Know A Place" came first, but it does prove that musical passages are re-used in the most unusual ways. When you chill that opening down, along with the lyrics of "Sesame Street", the outcome can be a bit bittersweet ...

And the fact that this is a derivative of Downtown (or vice versa, as I don't know which came first).

Hatch &/or Pet once admitted that it was meant to be a follow-up: "Downtown II", literally.

  20. It's a very different tune though. Both are masterful works, but IKaP has more "danger" to it. Something kinda brooding in some of the chords... I don't know how to explain it... Downtown is more lighthearted.

You're right and I meant "aimed as Downtown II" - as in a sequel. I didn't mean to imply that they sounded similar.
(actually I was responding to, but not in complete agreement with marigolddilemna's post)

edit: I think it was Pet on french TV who said it was Downtown - The Sequel

It's totally an attempt at "Downtown II." I don't think it's really dark or broody, it's just not quite as good a melody. "Downtown" is just a beautiful, expansive, once-in-a-career melody. It makes a night on the town sound like paradise. "I Know A Place" isn't bad, it just isn't quite as spectacular.

    Disagree.
“I Know A Place” is an excellent follow up to “Downtown”
    Superb arrangement and production.

Not talking about arrangement and production, just the melody.

It's a great song, a nice tribute to The Cavern.
