I've always heard a strange quiver-like quality to the piano on this song when the single notes play that beautiful childlike main melody throughout, in between verses. It seems with the remastered versions over the years (both CD and vinyl), it's even more "there". Does anyone else hear it??

It sounds sped-up to me. Psychedelic/Harpsichord-like intent?

It sounds cool and if it’s time. Unless maybe the world’s greatest, most amazing mastering engineer in the world got a crack at it...yes, I’m taking about Kevin Gray!!!

They wanted it to sound that way, more like an effect or electronic instrument.

It's beautiful. Not plinky or harsh at all.

    I assume its Nicky Hopkins.

Sure sounds to me like loads of compression was applied to that piano. Each hammer strike has a pronounced “click”. Although unnatural, I quite like the sound in the context of that song. Nicky Hopkins’ playing is superb. I like the strings, too (arranged by Led Zep’s John Paul Jones).

The sound you hear has surely been treated somehow to sound like that.
    It's in the master.

A woman I work with has it as her phone ring-tone. Oddly enough, I never tire of hearing it...and I hear it a lot.

Overtones from no pedaling is what you are hearing.

You get more overtones WITH pedaling.

A classic track if ever there was one.

Actually that sounds like a plan.

It sounds like a bit of tape flutter to me. Perhaps some sort on the capstan.

I think the piano was altered electronically after it was recorded in order to give it a music box type of effect.

It is made to sound like a toy piano. I think the purpose of the whole arrangement is to create some child-like, fairy tale atmosphere for this song.

The piano is obviously stoned. Probably a contact high.
