Today marks the 50th anniversary of the debut of The Prisoner starring Patrick McGoohan. Gerry Anderson's equally dark Captain Scarlet also started on the same day in 1967. I've posted an article celebrating the anniversary on my SPY VIBE: SpyVibe: PRISONER SCARLET 50TH
I watched The Prisoner religiously went it came to one of the independent TV stations we could get in our area of the US in 1969. Loved it everything about it then, and love it even more now.
Great show, and it has stood the test of time much better than many. The Prisoner, that is. I've never seen Captain Scarlet.
One of the few TV shows that actually reached out of the box and shaped my life. I remember asking my parents what the giant beach ball was all about (I was about 7 or 8) and they had no idea. There was something on TV my parents didn't understand. ?!?!?! I've been obsessed by it ever since. That Blu Ray restoration that came out a few years back is revelatory.
I was fascinated by The Prisoner and 'the village' (Portmeirion) when it ran in '70s/'80s re-runs. I almost wonder though if people who liked it brought a lot to it. It must be a work of 'A'rt. We sure don't see very many like this. I even went as far as to get the fan-club video with the alternate pilot and Big Ben episode, and the two colour Danger Man (Secret Agent)s set in Japan and made in colour. Anyone had any 'rovers' in their dreams?
Have DVD box thinking of upgrading to Blu Ray, DVD box looks lovely in comparison to the slim BD amaray. Is there more extras with Blu-Ray?
1965 Prisoner Morris Mini Moke - Classic Car Auctions In the mid-70's there was a Fan newsletter which featured a great article on Fan restored Mini-Moke- from tv series, well another was discovered sometime ago in a dry barn in Holland and with mostly original parts plus even fabric canopy intact! It's undergoing a Restoration in professional hands now.
Just bought the entire series on DVD for 5.00 at a used book shop. Can't wait to watch it again 40 years later.
The Blu-ray looks and sounds awesome. They did a great job with it. Rewind @ www.dvdcompare.net - Prisoner (The) (TV) (Blu-ray) (1967-1968) I'm one of those people that believe The Prisoner is television's finest achievement. It's one of the rare television programs to make a statement while also being supremely entertaining.
Sound will be Mono. DVD picture looked great. Guess the BD will have better detail/sharpness. Around the time of DVD box, three soundtrack CDs came out..guess for The Prisoner collector in mind. Checked Amazon bd reviews. Audio sync problems reported. But ..picture quality better.
Ah yes, The Prisoner; the original absurd TV drama and one of my all-time favorites. Just in case anyone needs a reminder of the original ITV broadcast order, here you go. (This is the same order on the BluRay, by the way.) ARRIVAL - 29 September 1967 THE CHIMES OF BIG BEN - 6 October A. B. AND C. - 13 October FREE FOR ALL - 20 October THE SCHIZOID MAN - 27 October THE GENERAL - 3 November MANY HAPPY RETURNS - 10 November DANCE OF THE DEAD - 17 November CHECKMATE - 24 November HAMMER INTO ANVIL - 1 December IT'S YOUR FUNERAL - 8 December A CHANGE OF MIND - 15 December DO NOT FORSAKE ME, OH MY DARLING - 22 December LIVING IN HARMONY - 29 December THE GIRL WHO WAS DEATH - 18 January 1968 ONCE UPON A TIME - 25 January FALL OUT - 1 February
My favourite tv show of all time. Loved it since I first saw it when I was around 12. Went to Portmeirion for my Birthday earlier this year and it was an incredible experience.
I remember an episode of the sitcom '2.4 Children' where they went there; it was a lot of fun to see that! One of the 'Pickers' shows (some guys in a van buying up old stuff to resell) we have over here visited more recently and there were still some street signs and bits n bobs in storage in Portmeirion which they tried to buy. I believe they let them buy one item that had been on screen. 17 is quite a bit for many UK series in modern times, many are only 6-8 episodes per 'season'... quality not quantity!
Wow, that IS a bargain since it's $250 on Amazon. OK that is the blu-ray but still. Sell it to me when you're done! (I'm serious, my brother lives in Livermore and I do fly through San Jose...) Is this streamable? I looked it up on canistream.it but no listing And, to hijack things a little bit, how about UFO?
The 5.1 sounds weirdly phasey, so I always listen using the mono track. The picture quality is excellent.
I gave it as a birthday present on regular DVD (the recipient already had UFO). I can't remember what the price was but it was at Amoeba in San Francisco.
