    Awesome '80s - Razor & Tie OPCD-4551 (1994)

    Disc 2
    1. We Got The Beat - Go-Go's 2:31 [45 mix, used on all CD versions of the song and later pressings of the vinyl Beauty And The Beat LP]
Based on Warner Special Products' 2-CD Night Beat (1988)
    So is JCI's Only Dance 1980-1984 (1995) and JCI's Only Rock 'N Roll #1 Radio Hits 1980-1984 (1996).
    2. Straight Up - Paula Abdul 4:10
Based on JCI's Hot Moves (1989)
    3. Der Kommissar - After The Fire 4:08 [45 version]
Not sure where this came from
Time-Life's Sounds Of The Eighties Vol. 16 The Early '80s (1996) is a differently EQ'd digital clone of Awesome '80s, and Madacy's Rock On 1983 Vol. 2 (2005) is a very harshly EQ'd digital clone of Awesome '80s.
    4. Shake It Up - Cars 3:34
Based on Warner Special Products' 3-CD After Hours (1990)
    5. Love Is A Battlefield - Pat Benatar 4:10 [45 version]
Based on Time-Life's 2-CD Rock Dreams (1993), but Awesome '80s cuts off opening sound that's present on Rock Dreams
So is Time-Life's Sounds Of The Eighties Vol. 11 1983-1984 (1995; differently EQ'd digital clone of Awesome '80s and also cuts off opening sound) and EMI's Rock 'N Roll Relix 1982-1983 (1998; digitally exactly 3.165 dB quieter than Awesome '80s and also cuts off opening sound).
    6. Working For The Weekend - Loverboy 3:42
Based on Columbia's Loverboy collection Big Ones (1989)
So is Sony's Forever Rock Vol. 3 (1996; differently EQ'd digital clone of Big Ones), Time-Life's Guitar Rock Vol. 24 The '80s Take Two (1996; differently EQ'd digital clone of Big Ones), and Time-Life's Sounds Of The Eighties Vol. 18 The Early '80s: Take Two (1996; differently EQ'd digital clone of Big Ones).
    7. Shout - Tears For Fears 4:06 [45 version]
Not sure where this came from
    8. I Feel For You - Chaka Khan 4:06 [45 version]
Not sure where this came from
JCI's Only Rock 'N Roll 1980-1984 (1994) uses same analog transfer as Awesome '80s, and Time-Life's Sounds Of The Eighties Vol. 11 1983-1984 (1995) is a differently EQ'd digital clone of Awesome '80s.
    9. Rosanna - Toto 4:00 [45 version]
Based on Warner Special Products' 2-CD Love Songs (1988)
    10. Stand Back - Stevie Nicks 4:48 [LP version, hit mix, not the remix on Timespace]
Not sure where this came from
    11. Walk This Way - Run-D.M.C. 3:42 [45 version]
Not sure where this came from
    12. Need You Tonight - INXS 3:03
Probably based on Kick, because the word "kind" cuts out where it would run into "Mediate" on the album. The true 45 has an uncut "kind", as on the promo disc Atlantic's Year In Review 1987.
    13. One Thing Leads To Another - Fixx 3:15 [LP mix; runs about 0.6% too fast]
Based on Warner Special Products' 3-CD After Hours (1990)
So is Warner Special Products' 2-CD Ultimate Party Album (1992), JCI's Only Dance 1980-1984 (1995), Warner Special Products' 18 Modern Rock Classics (1996; digitally identical to Only Dance), and Time-Life's 2-CD Modern Rock Vol. 1 1982-1983 (1999; digitally identical to Only Dance).
    14. Just A Gigolo/I Ain't Got Nobody - David Lee Roth 4:19 [45 version]
Not sure where this came from
Time-Life's Sounds Of The Eighties Vol. 12 1985-1986 (1995) is differently EQ'd digital clone of Awesome '80s.
    15. You Keep Me Hangin' On - Kim Wilde 4:15
Based on Time-Life's 2-CD Rock Dreams (1993); both Rock Dreams and Awesome '80s cut off the first 0.25 seconds of the intro
So is MCA's Greatest Rock Hits Of The '80s (1996; digitally exactly 1.9 dB quieter than Rock Dreams but has intact intro) and Time-Life's 2-CD Modern Rock Vol. 5 Dance (1999; digitally exactly 0.4 dB quieter than Rock Dreams but has intact intro).
    16. Heat Of The Moment - Asia 3:49
Based on Geffen's Asia target CD
So is Time-Life's 2-CD Rock Dreams (1993; digitally exactly 1.2 dB louder than Asia target CD), Time-Life's Guitar Rock Vol. 13 The Early '80s (1994; digitally exactly 1.2 dB louder than Awesome '80s), Priority's Rock Of The '80s Vol. 14 (1994), Time Life's Sounds Of The Eighties Vol. 5 1982 (1994; differently EQ'd digital clone of Awesome '80s), Warner Special Products' 2-CD Rock This Way (1995), Madacy's Rock On 1982 (1996; digitally exactly 1.2 dB louder than Awesome '80s), and Time-Life's Classic Soft Rock Vol. 10 Heat Of The Moment (2007).
    17. The Warrior - Scandal featuring Patty Smyth 3:52 [LP version]
Levels drop from beginning to end
Not sure where this came from
Warner Special Products' 18 Screamers From The '80s (1995) uses same analog transfer as Awesome '80s.
    18. Keep Your Hands To Yourself - Georgia Satellites 3:25
Not sure where this came from
These all use the same analog transfer as Awesome '80s: JCI's Only Rock 'N Roll 1985-1989 (1994), Warner Special Products' 2-CD Rockin' USA (1994), Warner Special Products' 18 Screamers From The '80s (1995), Time-Life's Guitar Rock Vol. 18 The Heavy '80s (1995; digitally exactly 1.4 dB louder than Only Rock 'N Roll), and Time-Life's Sounds Of The Eighties Vol. 28 Rolling Stone 1986-1987 (1995; differently EQ'd digital clone of Only Rock 'N Roll).
    19. C'est La Vie - Robbie Nevil 3:26 [45 version]
Based on Rhino's Billboard Top Hits 1987 (1994)
So is Time-Life's Sounds Of The Eighties Vol. 9 1987 (1995; differently EQ'd digital clone of Billboard but with added compression).

Can anyone point me to the cover for the 'Everything '80s' compilation? I've searched and searched, but I'm only bringing up the (unrelated) 2002 compilation of the same name.

    Thanks!

    Ron,

I Can't Wait! You are the undisputed "King of Compilations".

Over the past years your excellent informative and well researched posts have allowed me to find some really cools CD's that I otherwise might have ignored like the Silver Eagle series, Sessions Presents series, and even some Rhino stuff. I know this one is not in your power alley but Rhino's "Song's That Got Us Through WWII" - any tiny chance of an analysis or even a review of those?

Thanks! I'm not seeing that compilation anywhere for sale. I wonder if it was also a 'tv only' release?

Thanks. Granted 'everything 80s' is a tough search criteria, but the other one pops up on amazon and ebay with no problems. In searching google for the image I'm still coming up short -- I'll keep trying.

That one's WAY out of my league. I haven't done any comparisons at all for music that old.

I'd guess that it's going to come down to the skill of the guy doing the needledrops. If Bill Inglot mastered this one, you're probably OK. I don't know of many Rhino discs that use excessive NR, so you should be fine.

Thanks for all of these updates. Can I ask one question.

Are the Hot 100 listings on your web site (found here: http://crapfromthepast.com/hot100/) still up-to-date? And what is AK's Collection?

    Thanks!

Those Hot 100 files are indeed up-to-date. I update them every few weeks. AK's collection means that the track is from Aaron K, a collector friend of mine.

Inglot did both volumes. I really have no basis for compression but Vol 1 from 1990 sounds pretty good given the source materials. Vol II from 1994 while still decent is a notch below in sound. The tracks are a nice retrospective of the era and I recommend the 2 CD's

Bumping up a few decades on the material any thoughts on Rhino's "Songs Of Protest" from 1991 ?

Does anyone have an opinion on the I Want My 80s Box and the follow up Hit Me With Your 80s Box? Are these on par with the OMIGOD box?

Are they worth seeking out from a sound quality perspective?

I've been collecting the comps that date from the early to mid 90s and they all sound great.

    Forever '80s - Razor & Tie A2-25069 (1994)

    Disc 2
    1. I Keep Forgettin' (Every Time You're Near) - Michael McDonald 3:41
Not sure where this came from
    2. Cherish - Kool And The Gang 4:19 [edit of 12" single version]
Not sure where this came from
Time-Life's Sounds Of The Eighties Vol. 12 1985-1986 (1995; differently EQ'd digital clone of Forever '80s)
    3. When I See You Smile - Bad English 4:17
Not sure where this came from
    4. Arthur's Theme (Best That You Can Do) - Christopher Cross 3:54
Not sure where this came from
These are all differently EQ'd digital clones of Forever '80s: Time-Life's Sounds Of The Eighties Vol. 14 1980-1982 (1995), Time-Life's 2-CD Body Talk Vol. 3 Moonlit Nights (1996), Time-Life's Sounds Of The Eighties Vol. 31 Movie Hits Of The '80s (1996), and Time-Life's Another Lost Decade At The Movies (2005).
    5. Always - Atlantic Starr 4:00 [45 version]
Not sure where this came from
Time-Life's 2-CD Body Talk Vol. 5 Sealed With A Kiss (1996; differently EQ'd digital clone of Forever '80s)
    6. True - Spandau Ballet 5:35 [commercial 45 version]

So is Cema's 2-CD Cool Rock (1995; differently EQ'd digital clone of The Singles Collection) and Madacy's Rock On 1983 Sweet Dreams (1998; differently EQ'd digital clone of The Singles Collection), both of which have their left and right channels reversed
    7. Angel Of The Morning - Juice Newton 4:09 [LP length]
Is taken from vinyl and has noise reduction!
The Capitol Juice Newton disc Greatest Hits And More (1987) inexplicably used a needledrop of "Angel Of The Morning". It was a very good needledrop, and didn't use any noise reduction, but was still a needledrop nonetheless. Odd for a song on the same label that was only six years old at the time...
The Cema Special Markets' cheapie 10 Best Series Greatest Hits (1992) is based on Greatest Hits And More, but with the addition of noise reduction. It's not unbearable, but it's noticeable on the fade. Compare the fade of Greatest Hits And More to the fade of 10 Best Series Greatest Hits for a rare, crystal-clear example of before/after noise reduction.
Forever '80s is based on 10 Best Series Greatest Hits (1992).
So is Time-Life's 2-CD Singers And Songwriters Vol. 13 1979-1989 (2001; digitally identical to 10 Best Series Greatest Hits).
    8. Right Here Waiting - Richard Marx 4:24
Not sure where this came from
    9. Tonight I Celebrate My Love - Peabo Bryson And Roberta Flack 3:30
Not sure where this came from
    10. Can't Fight This Feeling - REO Speedwagon 4:49 [the LP has a 13-second-long fade; the 45 has a 7-second-long fade but is otherwise identical to the LP version; Forever '80s has a 12-second-long fade]
Based on Epic's REO Speedwagon collection The Hits (1988), but with a 1-second-shorter fade
So is Cema's Entertainment Weekly Presents Rock Archives Vol. 2 (1990; fade shortened to 9 seconds), Priority's Eighties Greatest Rock Hits Vol. 5 From The Heart (1992; way too loud and clips a lot), Time-Life's 2-CD Body Talk Vol. 9 Magic Moments (1996; differently EQ'd digital clone of The Hits), Time-Life Body Talk The Language Of Love (1998; differently EQ'd digital clone of The Hits), and Time-Life's 2-CD Classic Soft Rock Vol. 4 More Than A Feeling (2006; differently EQ'd digital clone of The Hits).
    11. All I Need - Jack Wagner 3:30
Not sure where this came from
These are all differently EQ'd digital clones of Forever '80s: Time-Life's 2-CD Body Talk Vol. 6 Only You (1996), Time-Life's Sounds Of The Eighties Vol. 15 The Mid-'80s (1996), and Time-Life's 2-CD Classic Soft Rock Vol. 2 Ride Like The Wind (2006)
    12. Baby Come To Me - Patti Austin with James Ingram 3:35
Not sure where this came from
    13. You're A Friend Of Mine - Clarence Clemons and Jackson Browne 4:51 [LP version]

    14. I'll Always Love You - Taylor Dayne 4:31 [LP length]
Based on Arista's Tell It To My Heart (1987)
So is Sandstone's Cosmopolitan Vol. 2 (1992), Priority's Eighties Greatest Rock Hits Vol. 13 Soft Sounds (1994; digitally exactly 0.5 dB louder than Tell It To My Heart), Time-Life's 2-CD Body Talk Vol. 2 Just For You (1996; differently EQ'd digital clone of Cosmopolitan), Time-Life's Body Talk Hearts Together (1998; differently EQ'd digital clone of Cosmopolitan), and Time-Life's Body Talk Vol. 22 Forever Love (2001; digitally identical to Forever '80s)

    17. Heaven - Warrant 3:58 [LP version]
Not sure where this came from
    18. Never Gonna Let You Go - Sergio Mendes 4:15
    Based on A&M's Classics Vol. 18 (1987)
So is Time-Life's 2-CD Body Talk Vol. 4 Together Forever (1996; digitally exactly 1.206 dB quieter than Forever '80s), and Time-Life's Body And Soul Vol. 16 Romantic Interludes (1999; differently EQ'd digital clone of Forever '80s).

I don't know firsthand about Rhino's Songs Of Protest, I Want My 80s Box and Hit Me With Your 80s Box.

I'd guess that the '80s boxes have a handful of gems that are REALLY hard to find on CD, and a whole lot of more common material that's easy to find elsewhere. The sound is probably loud, but I can't verify.

In general, if you buy a Rhino compilation from 1996 or earlier, or a Time-Life compilation released between 1995 and 2002 (the Dennis Drake years), you'll be very pleased.

Regarding the 2002/2003 Rhino OMIGOD box. The track selection, package and booklet are truly outstanding, no offense but the sound quality is pretty much an abomination to my ears. I remember getting it new a couple of years before I joined the forum and even then I could not believe how horrible the sound quality was. Since then I have compiled my own CDr's of all the tracks in significantly better sound quality. It took a couple of years but worth it. A few did require needle drops. I keep the CDr's in the box and the original CD's in storage. Although now with my Oppo BDP-95 I just play them, like I do most compilations, streamed from my NAS

Does anyone own the Pure 80s and/or More Pure 80s compilations -- from 1999 (or so)?

    Any opinions? Thanks.

I have (or at one point had) both.

Just about all tracks are based on existing masterings, but with added compression. For '80s-music compilations, you can do better.

More Pure '80s is the one place on CD to find the "Canadian Edit" of "Rock Me Amadeus", which is noteworthy.

Does anyone have a preferred version of Chilliwack's "My Girl (Gone Gone Gone)"?

This is one that I'm surprised wasn't a top 40 hit in the US but I remember hearing it often at the time and it still gets stuck in my head for days if I let it.

The Canadian '80s-era Greatest Hits sounds terrific. I don't have it in front of me, but I think it's on CBS Canada with a copyright date of 1983. The version on this disc is the 45 version, which has a slightly longer intro than the LP and can easily be edited down to form the LP version, if that's your thing.

Thanks -- I'll try to find a copy from our neighbors up north.

It's also on Barry Scott Presents: The Lost 45s of the '70s & '80s but that's a pricey disc and I'm not sure I want to drop $30 for the one song.

I'd just like to thank you for the thread. I'm finding the listing of the HITS useful indeed. No sarcasm here.
However, my reason is a bit skewed.
It just confirms for me why so many people have contempt for the 80's.
If this was what the 80's meant to me, I just wouldn't bother.
to my taste the charts were just a load of ******.
Fortunately, there was loads of music I really love going on, it just wasn't making the charts. :)
I'm loving looking over the list of chart hits though.

    Totally '80s - Razor & Tie/Warner Special Products OPCD-4544 (1993)

    Disc 1
    1. Take On Me - a-ha 3:50
Based on Warner Special Products' 2-CD Night Beat (1988)
So is Time-Life's Sounds Of The Eighties Vol. 2 1985 (1994), JCI's Only Dance 1985-1989 (1995), Madacy's Rock On 1985 (1996; is digitally exactly 1.5 dB louder than Sounds Of The Eighties), Time-Life's 2-CD Modern Rock Vol. 9 Mid-'80s (2000; digitally identical to Sounds Of The Eighties), and Time-Life's
Ultimate Love Songs Collection Feelin' Good (2005).
    2. Hot Hot Hot - Buster Poindexter and His Banshees of Blue 3:50 [LP mix faded early to the length of the 45]
Not sure where this came from
    3. Caribbean Queen (No More Love On The Run) - Billy Ocean 3:44 [US 45 version]
Based on Warner Special Products' 3-CD After Hours (1990)
    So is JCI's Only Dance 1985-1989 (1995).
    4. Walk Like An Egyptian - Bangles 3:25
Based on Columbia's Bangles single-album Different Light (1986)
So is Cema's Entertainment Weekly Presents Rock Archives Vol. 2 (1990; digitally exactly 0.218 dB louder than Different Light), JCI's Only Rock 'N Roll 1985-1989 (1994), Rhino's Hang The DJ 1986 (1996; differently-EQ'd digital clone of Different Light), and EMI's Rock 'N Roll Relix 1986-1987 (1998; differently-EQ'd digital clone of Different Light)
    5. Who Can It Be Now? - Men At Work 3:23
Not sure where this came from
Warner Special Product's 2-CD Punk (1996) uses the same analog transfer as Totally '80s.
    6. Addicted To Love - Robert Palmer 3:57 [video version that's possibly used on the UK 45; it's missing a beat on the intro]
Based on Island's 2-CD The Island Story (1987; this disc marks the first appearance of this version in the US, and possibly worldwide)
    So is Time-Life's 2-CD Rock Dreams (1993).
    7. Karma Chameleon - Culture Club 4:14 [proper length; there are also versions on CD running too short at about 3:59 and about 4:06; has tiny noise at very tail of fade]
Based on Rhino's Billboard Top Hits 1984 (1992, no noise at tail of fade)
So is Warner Special Products' 2-CD Good Times (1991; RE-1 reissue; has a tiny noise at very tail of fade), and Time-Life's Sounds Of The Eighties Vol. 6 1984 (1995; differently-EQ'd digital clone of Billboard with lots of added compression).
    8. Jump (For My Love) - Pointer Sisters 4:00 [45 version]
Based on Warner Special Products' 2-CD Feel Good Rock (1989)
So is Warner Special Products' 2-CD Good Times (1991), Warner Special Products' 2-CD Ultimate Party Album (1992; differently-EQ'd digital clone of Good Times), and JCI's Only Rock 'N Roll 1980-1984 (1995).
    9. Wild Thing - Tone-Loc 4:25
Based on Delicious Vinyl CD single for "Wild Thing" and, probably, the Loc-ed After Dark full-length CD
    10. Everybody Have Fun Tonight - Wang Chung 4:17 [true 45 edit, but suffers from tape drag; starts at 129.3 BPM and slows to 128.5 BPM by end of song]
Based on Warner Special Products' 3-CD After Hours (1990)
So is Time-Life's Sounds Of The Eighties Vol. 4 1986 (1994; digitally identical to Totally '80s after 0:38) and JCI's Only Dance 1985-1989 (1995). All of the above suffer from tape drag. The version on Rhino's Like Omigod is a homemade attempt to recreate the 45 edit from better tape sources, but is incorrect because it misses the second edit and instead fades early. The 45 edit doesn't exist on CD in a good-sounding version; best to do your own edit from the LP version on the 1997 Greatest Hits, which sounds great.
    11. Walking On Sunshine - Katrina And The Waves 4:00
Not sure where this came from, but it's kinda compressed here
The same analog transfer is used for Time Life's Sounds Of The Eighties Vol. 2 1985 (1994), JCI's Only Dance 1985-1989 (1995), Time-Life's Sounds Of The Eighties Essential '80s (1998; differently-EQ'd digital clone of earlier Sounds Of The Eighties), and Time-Life's 2-CD Modern Rock Vol. 3 1984-1985 (digitally exactly 0.4 dB louder than earlier Sounds Of The Eighties).
    12. Jessie's Girl - Rick Springfield 3:14
Based on Rhino's Billboard Top Hits 1981 (1992)
So is Time-Life's Rock Dreams (1993), Time-Life's Sounds Of The Eighties Vol. 8 1981 (1995; differently EQ'd digital clone of Billboard), and Time-Life's Sounds Of The Eighties Vol. 24 Everything '80s (2002; digitally identical to earlier Sounds Of The Eighties).
    13. The Heat Is On - Glenn Frey 3:46 [left/right channels swapped]
Based on Warner Special Products' 3-CD After Hours (1990), which also has its left/right channels swapped.
    14. Wild Wild West - Escape Club 4:02 [45 version]
Based on the promo CD Atlantic's Year In Review 1988 (1989)
So is JCI's Only Rock 'N Roll 1980-1984 (1995), Warner Special Product's 2-CD Punk (1996), and Madacy's Rock On 1988 Endless Summer Nights (1998; digital clone of Only Rock 'N Roll 1980-1984).
    15. Heaven Is A Place On Earth - Belinda Carlisle 4:06
Not sure where this came from, but it runs about 0.6% slower than just about all other CDs with this song
    16. She Works Hard For The Money - Donna Summer 4:11 [45 version]
Based on Warner Special Products' 3-CD After Hours (1990)
So is Time-Life's Sounds Of The Eighties Vol. 11 1983-1984 (1995; differently-EQ'd digital clone of Totally '80s), and Madacy's Rock On 1983 Sweet Dreams (1998; digitally exactly 1 dB louder than Totally '80s).
    17. Always Something There To Remind Me - Naked Eyes 3:41 [45 mix with drums over the intro, which is used on all CD versions and later pressings of LP]
Based on Warner Special Products' 3-CD After Hours (1990)
    18. Too Shy - Kajagoogoo 3:41 [LP version]
Based on Warner Special Products' 3-CD After Hours (1990)
    19. Missing You - John Waite 4:04 [45 mix]
Based on Time-Life's obscure 4-CD Great Love Songs Of The 70's And 80's Vol. 3 Missing You (1991)
    20. Sexual Healing - Marvin Gaye 3:58 [LP version]
Based on Time-Life's obscure 4-CD Great Love Songs Of The 70's And 80's Vol. 3 Missing You (1991)
So is Time-Life's 2-CD Body Talk (1994), JCI's Only Love 1980-1984 (1995), and Time-Life's Sounds Of The Eighties Vol. 26 Rolling Stone 1982-1983 (1995; digitally exactly 0.4 dB quieter than Totally '80s).

Disc 2 of Totally '80s to follow, along with Back To The '80s.

I know this isn't helpful, but "Rock Me Amadeus" was one of my guilty pleasures as a kid, and in the early years of the Net, I became obsessed with tracking down the many (MANY) versions of said song. I eventually received a gift from heaven thanks to a German Falco fan, who mailed me a CD-R of NOTHING but "Amadeus" mixes.

To this day, I can't tell you where he got them all (probably German only comps), but the Canadian edit is on here. And the Can/Am mix. And the American edit. And the American 12" mix.

My personal favorite is the Soleri Version... All 8:22 of it.
