David Bowie: stereo mix of Regazzo Solo Regazza Sola Beach Boys: stereo mix of California Girls from stereo/mono Summer Days reissue I don't listen to the mono mixes anymore of these
Not really no. You have to watch for the date or the contents on Amazon. Or if you are still unsure, for the Steven Wilson remixes, buy directly from burningshed.com or headphonedust.com
I prefer the Glover remixes that appear on the Deep Purple In Rock and Fireball special editions as well.
NONE whatsoever. I have tried over the last 30 years and just don't get the whole remix craze. The only one that may even come close is Zappa's CD mix of Freak Out. It is certainly cleaner that the original Stereo and blows away the mono IMO. It may in fact be the only one Zappa got right. It does not however replace the original or leave it in the dust.
Speaking of fighting talk, I am just waiting to see what will happen when someone lists the new Sgt. Pepper remix
I have to disagree Steven brings out the magic! Perhaps we were so used to listen to those mixes with loads of tape bouncing down, lower generation tapes, etc Steven does pristine quality mixes, full of 3 dimentional sound, with real life sounding instruments, keeping the spirit and the time they were recorded intact. He has done about the best job in remixing in this age. Especially with Crimson, Tull and Gentle Giant Hands down And Steven, if you're reading this thread, please bring on Genesis, Camel, Porcupine Tree, Peter Gabriel, ABBA, Pink Floyd, Radiohead, Zeppelin, great fusion artists like Jean Luc Ponty, etc
Not that I can't listen to the originals any more but I prefer many of the remixes on Yellow Submarine Songtrack to the original mixes.
I'm hard-pressed to find any where I would never want to go back and hear the original. But there are definitely several where the remix better reveals the artwork in question (in my opinion): - The "Sgt Pepper 50th Remix", definitely. - Misty Mountain Hop (Companion Disc Remix): Led Zeppelin - Stairway To Heaven (Sunset Sound Mix - Companion Disc): Led Zeppelin - Rock And Roll (Companion Disc Remix): Led Zeppelin - A handful of the Doors 40th Anniversary Remixes - A few of Ezrin's remixes for "Alice Cooper's Greatest Hits" (1974)
I would like to ask that we not bring up the Sgt Pepper remix or any Giles remix. Let’s not turn this into a Beatles remix thread. There are millions of other remixes to mention I’m sure. Thanks
Pearl Jam’s Ten. I feel that the 2011 remix is how the album should’ve sounded in the first place. I never liked how the original mix was drenched in reverb and I had wished it sounded more heavy, kind of like the radio version of Even Flow, and then the remix came out and I was blown away that it sounded just like how I wanted it to. I listened to the original mix in the car the other day and I was reminded of why I didn’t ever like it much, not as aggressive sounding as I feel this music should be presented. However I gotta say I feel the opposite about the new remix of the Temple of the Dog album, in that I prefer the original mix which has plenty of reverb like Ten on it to the recently released remix which has a drier sound to it.
My apologies. I was just being genuinely honest in response to the question asked. I stay away from all negative or confrontational threads myself, so I'm with you in that regard!
The SW remix of Chicago II is definitely an improvement. I also really like the 2017 stereo remix of Wild Honey. I'm usually a "mono albums should be in mono!" person, but they really did a fantastic job on that one, and the original mix was rather muddy and didn't really do the record any favors.
The 5.1 remix on the first Layla SACD. I haven’t heard the original mix since I bought it, and I don’t expect to ever again.
Can't really disagree with this. There may be a few 21st Century mixes of classic older albums that add some clarity, balance and even punch; but it seems there's always a loss, however subtle, of some essential organic quality -- a 'vibe' -- present in the original. I can enjoy the modern mix (Benefit by Jethro Tull comes to mind, S.W. did a nice job there), but in every case I keep the original around.
John Lennon ~ Mind Games I also prefer the "modern" stereo remixes of "Pet Sounds" and "Sunshine Superman".
I can't listen to the SACD 5.1 mix of Layla ever since I heard the Elliot Scheiner 5.1 remix on the DVD. I do, however, still listen to the original stereo mix.
