Just got this press release from Rhino - wanted to share with y'all: "The Label Formerly Known As Warner Strategic Marketing" Returns To Its Roots LOS ANGELES - Warner Strategic Marketing, the "catalog-on-steroids" division of the Warner Music Group, is officially changing its name to Rhino Entertainment, according to label President, Scott Pascucci. Warner Strategic Marketing was created in late 2001 to serve as the central catalog development, licensing, soundtrack, and television marketing area for the Warner Music Group. WSM incorporated Rhino Entertainment, WMG Soundtracks, WSM Home Video, Warner Special Products, and WMG's Television Marketing department. Given the myriad ways it developed and promoted music and video for its parent company, it was a many-headed beast. But in late 2002 the various divisions of WSM joined forces in new offices in Burbank, and the improved focus and cooperation made it look less like a hydra and more like another animal... In its 27-year history, Rhino has earned a reputation as a company willing to sweat the details to put out the industry's best audio and video releases -- a company that also understood that a sense of humor and social responsibility was actually good for business. While these traits were shared across the division, they were hardly the sort of thing that an acronym -- no matter how strategic -- could communicate. "Inside and outside the music industry, people know what Rhino is," remarks Pascucci. "It's a strong brand, but it's more than that -- it's a community of professionals whose passion for great music, artist worship, and pop culture borders on zealotry. 'Rhino' has a personality that the moniker 'WSM' just can't convey. I was proud to work at Warner Strategic Marketing, but I'd much rather work at Rhino."
