Watched this on the big screen when it came out. The DVD, some scenes look a little dark, how's the blu ray in comparison? Also, is it 16x9, 5.1 now?

The mind boggles that this movie wasn't more of a hit. I guess not enough star power. Ed Harris was still pretty young.

Models ? Reminds me of Kubrick’ Odyssey.
Just checked Space Odyssey IMDb, 28 special effects people listed .. all uncredited.

Entertaining from start to finish, despite the length. I saw it one time in 70mm at the Cinerama in Seattle (a one-off showing, well after the Seattle 70mm run ended over at the Guild 45th), and while it was great seeing it on a huge curved screen, it holds up well on tv, too.

I saw it in 1984, but was only six years old. Just watched it again for the second time. Much better this time. Good infotainment.

Some liberties with the accuracy of the astronaut scenes, but it's just a movie. The "extra personality" and drama of the astronaut accounts made for a more compelling movie than if the writer/director, Kaufman, had tried to mimic their actual personalities.

Chuck Yeager was OK with Kaufman's approach, but the real astronauts apparently didn't like the jocularity and hijinks. Understandable, but it isn't a documentary.

I believe Siskel and/or Ebert (circa 1989 or 1990) opined that it was the best movie of the 1980s (beating out Raging Bill).
