For those of us who don't need a box, what's the best one- (or at most -two) disc comp?

All things considered, I think the GH disc is the one for me. Much as I'd like the hybrid AF disc, $200?

What I'd like to see are the Stereo KAPP Albums reissued in a box set. The stereo mixes were wonderful.

It depends - career spanning or label specific (PYE, Liberty, RCA, Sire, PRT...)?

This is a career spanning 2 CD set:

    The Searchers - 1963-2003: 40th Anniversary Collection

For PYE there are a number of options...

For the mono single A-sides look no further than Hits Collection:

    The Searchers - Hits Collection

    For the B-sides and rarities:

The Searchers - The Searchers Play The System - Rarities, Oddities & Flipsides

The two old A Golden Hour Of The Searchers volumes are pretty good for mostly stereo:

The Searchers - A Golden Hour Of The Searchers

[Vol 2 not on discogs: Knight Records, KGH CD 132]

Rhino's Greatest Hits is a good one disc option:

    The Searchers - Greatest Hits

For mono, The Pye Anthology is a decent 2CD overview:

The Searchers - The Pye Anthology 1963-1967

Of course, for stereo Steve's SACD is a great listen:

    The Searchers - The Collection

Although it's 3 CDs, the 30th Anniversary set is worth considering, it has a decent selection of hits, album tracks and rarities, including songs from an aborted album when they briefly returned to the label in 1982/3 (Precision Records and Tapes [PRT] by then) - it also has decent foldout artwork with notes, pics, Pete Frame family tree and posters:

The Searchers - The Searchers 30th Anniversary Collection 1962-1992

    There's also a budget 3CD release - Definitive Searchers:

The Searchers - The Definitive Pye Collection

For the Liberty sides, and some PYE oddities:

The Searchers - German, French Rare Recordings

    RCA:

The Searchers - Second Take The Complete RCA/UK Recordings

    Sire:

The Searchers - The Sire Sessions - Rockfield Recordings 1979-80

yes, usually they always turn up after you laid down a ton of coin...LOL.

  13. The Searchers SACD is very good of course but I don't think it's worth the lavish prices it commands these days. Unless you can get it for a fair price, look elsewhere.

On this one, do you happen to know if Umbrella Man is the mono single mix or a stereo mix? Love the tune, have the single, but I'd like to hear it in true stereo if it's available somewhere...

  16. Thanks for the comprehensive overview - it's much appreciated.

Slightly OT: just over a year ago, I went to a 60s revue evening, with the Searchers topping the bill.

I was slightly anxious of hearing something that might tarnish all of the wonderful memories.

How wrong I was - these guys most certainly did not dial it in.

Their set included what might be expected but also a fair number of rarities to keep the 'ultra-fan' happy. It was a wonderful, vibrant performance, performed with good humour and humility.

    Catch them while you can.

    Best Wishes,
    David

mono - all the Liberty material on this Repertoire CD is taken directly from the singles and sounds a bit wonky from the clean-up processing but I don't know a better place to get it all.

The PYE rarities on this CD are also from vinyl - again, some of it is not readily available elsewhere.

S'truth! At the price of the GH disc, if the AF hybrid ever came down to a reasonable figure, I could afford both.

Definitely interested only in the Pye years, with as much stereo content as possible.

The Castle Reissues (mono/stereo + bonus tracks) of their five PYE albums might do it for you, then.

The best sounding compilation on CD (aside from the SACD hybrid) is perhaps PRT Collector from 1989 (PRT GHCD2). This is the same compilation as the old The Golden Hour Of The Searchers double LP but there's no fake stereo on the CD. Very occasionally there's a poor source (e.g. chewed up left channel on the stereo "Farmer John" - that wasn't fixed until 2001) but mostly it sounds like unfutzed master tapes and it's all stereo except for "I Don't Want To Go On Without You".

    PRT Collector - The Searchers

The first Golden Hour Of The Searchers CD sounds like a clone of the PRT Collector CD - the Golden Hour Vol. 2 CD is alright but it's not up to the same standard as the first one.

With the 2001 Sequel album re-issues and those two comps, all the Searchers original PYE UK 45s (singles and EPs) and the Liberty singles are fully covered.

There was a Searchers single issued in the UK by Philips in 1963 in conjunction with a various artists compilation album of live recordings, Twist at the Star-Club:

    Philips BF 1274 - "Sweet Nothin's" / "What'd I Say"

    The Searchers - Sweet Nothin's

Various - Twist At The Star-Club Hamburg

At the time, Philips issued the Searchers Star-Club recordings on the "Sweets For My Sweet" LP in Germany and Japan. This was also issued by Mercury as Hear! Hear! (minus one track - "Always It's You") in various territories but it wasn't released in the UK.

The Searchers - "Sweets For My Sweet" - The Searchers At The Star-Club Hamburg (Live Recording)

Both sides of the live single are on the Bear Family Star-Club CD:

The Searchers - At The Star-Club
