Never heard the vinyl but probably yes, although it sounds like the original US discs may be better than the original UK ones I have.

I was warned away from the original UK cd's (by the clerk in the record store) when they first came out - before the US cd's - saying they were too shrill.
But if the Made In Austria for Europe discs of Soul Mining are the same as those discs I remember, then they are probably the same as the US. Have a look...

    They aren't the same though:

    US:
    The The Soul Mining 1984 13 12 15
    14 12 12 13 15 15 13 13

    Austria:
    The The Soul Mining 1983 13 11 15
    13 11 12 13 14 15 12 14

    Different masterings.

To the The The :D UK CDs have pre-emphasis? That would explain the shrillness.

A couple of slightly different DR's does not a different mastering necessarily make.
In my experience, only the ears and peak levels can tell.

If the Austria is different from the US, have at it.
The US isn't a shrill disaster.
But it remains to be confirmed that the Austrian pressed DADC was sold as (or is identical to) the UK original.

Regarding pre-emphasis - a shrill sounding cd usually has nothing to do with PE.
The vast majority of cd players (and dacs?) decode it perfectly.
Only discs with PE, and the PE flag erroneously placed outside of the TOC will sound shrill due to the PE not being dealt with.

In the end, a shrill mastering is going to sound shrill no matter what!

The DR calculation works by a defined algorithm. If the mastering is the same, the algorithm gives the same number. If those numbers are different, then the mastering won't be the same. That's what I've found. There could be a shift, but the fact that the last song is lower for the US, while all the others that are different are higher, also indicates that the masterings are different.

Sounds like George has an Austria disc on the way, so he'll be able to tell us if they are the same or different. :agree:

    It's a different mastering, right?

Hopefully you'll try again? I'm kind of curious. If you wait too long though, maybe I'd try to pick up the Austria of Mind Bomb. One of my favorites albums of all time.

    Yeah, a full court pressing.

I'm good with my early CMU pressing of Mind Bomb. I had ordered Soul Mining simply because I had lost my case and wanted to replace it.

I want to say one more thing about the Infected remaster. You know the moment where the drums first come in during The Mercy Beat? On the original US CD, they are very powerful and dynamic; especially the snare. The compression on the remaster actually makes the snare quieter than the bass drums. The whole track just sounds way too wonky, jarring, and fatiguing to be anywhere near remotely listenable. Way to ruin my favorite The The song. Big :thumbsdow

My comments on the remaster of Infected can also be applied to Soul Mining; it's equally as horrendous. To further rub salt on the wound, the remaster doesn't have Perfect, which was available on the cassette and early CD versions. I know that they were trying to match the vinyl tracklisting, but still. Speaking of missing tracks, even the original CDs are missing the other 5 extra songs that were featured on the UK cassette. I suppose this means that the UK cassette is the definitive edition of Soul Mining, lol.

I've got most of his catalog on vinyl and that's pretty much the only way to hear these records. The new soul mining box set is very nice but absurdly expensive. Mind Bomb is essential listening and Dusk is an underrated masterpiece. Still waiting to find Hanky Panky on 10" vinyl but not an essential part of his catalog. Seek out the 12" singles, they sound great too. Saw him many times during the naked self tour, was disappointing at some of the crowd turn out.

It's possible one is tweaked from the other, I'll give you that.
Conversely, I have two pressings of Captain Fantastic with, if I remember correctly, have the same DRs.
But one is much smoother and warmer than the other.

US Rocket remaster and the Japan mini lp sleeve version.

I have the early Japanese pressing (ESCA 5094) which doesn't have Perfect:

    13

EAC values could be compared to make sure they were indeed different.

There is one obviously problem with using DR values, but sometimes there is a way around that.

DR values are rounded off to the single tens value. (IOW, nothing after the decimal point.) So a DR for a song that calculated out at 10.7 would look the same as 11.2, both ending up to be an 11.

The way around that is, if the person who posted the DRs at that site, also included the report. Then you can look at the report and further compare that way. Here is one I was looking at yesterday, appropriate this this thread in fact!

Album details - Dynamic Range Database

Even EAC values aren't infallible. It's rare, but sometimes different masterings have the same EAC peak levels too. Or if it appears to be a uniform shift, is it? Or is it just that a uniform EQ change is the difference?

Just like EAC peak values, DR values (and the reports) is a tool that can help determine if two masterings are the same or different. Listening is better, or an analytical EQ comparison.

Looks like some sort of compilation of the Radio Cineola broadcasts is coming out on vinyl and CD. There's no release date yet but the website will start taking preorders on October 6. Not sure about this one, a quick look over the tracklist shows there's a surprising amount of non-The The music included (interviews and cover songs) but I think that's in line with what the broadcasts were like anyway. Still looks pretty nice though...

Also, hey! New live dates next summer!

It's very exciting! I've just booked tickets for the Inertia Variations movie/Q & A at the ICA, but it's going to be a mad scramble to beat the touts for the live gig. I'm thinking of joining one of the major religions to get a bit of supernatural assistance for Friday.
I saw him at the Royal Albert Hall (capacity 5200) in the 1980s when he was with Johnny Marr, and also on the Naked Self tour - I think at the South Bank Centre.

And two dates won't be enough to satisfy demand. I can foresee some serious price scalping on tickets when they quickly sell out.
