I think my version would've made more money, and 95% of the film wouldn't change. But it's strictly a guess -- we'll never know what might have happened.

Carpenter's tense claustrophobic "The Thing" has withstood the test of time.

I think you might be correct on the money aspect of it, but it would change the art of it as well, hence my dislike for the idea.

Carpenter's "The Thing" is among the best in the pantheon of sci-fi/ horror IMHO.

As I am often reminded, it's called show business and not show art.

And not one chick in the whole film. But if Adrienne Barbeau was in it for few minutes it'd be okay with me.

If they don't make sense as a business proposition, they'll make no money and eventually, the filmmakers won't be able to make any more movies. Even Woody Allen ran into that during his career once or twice.

Let me check... that would be a yes. I assume you work to make a profit as well? Most businesses do.

I wasn't allowed to show off my acting chops. "Just fall on the ground and stay there" was the only direction that I got.

    How many takes? :D

Two takes. The first time I kept trying to see Kurt Russell. After I was given my direction, I got it right.

i have the DVD with some extras on it,showing how they did some of the creature effects, but i can't recall if they explained how they made the infected blood leap out of the petri dish?

What? No discussion about what your motivation for staying there was? Bad direction.

Nah, Mr. Carpenter was already mad at me for ruining a perfectly good take. I'm sure he would have found a replacement if he had the time.

That's the main reason I watch movies more than once and if I like it I'll watch it several times..
You could goto the washroom and miss the spider scene..if you saw it in the theatre.
I was 14 when JC's remake came out and never saw it in the theatre but I rented it every weekend for a long time on VHS, it's in my top 10 of all time Favorites..
I would have bought it back then on VHS but I believe movies cost like $100 or more back then.

Yes, they explain it. Look at Kurt's hand when the camera cuts back right before he touches the blood with the hot wire. It's a fake hand. At least I seem to remember it that way.

I wish they'd make movies like this again. CGI is great but I still feel like I'm watching a cartoon type thing.

I just watched a "Making of Guardians of the Galaxy" documentary, and I was amazed by how much of it was real, physical effects shot on set.

But I think even John Carpenter would agree there's a place for CGI and a place for the real thing. Often, you need a combination of both to pull off the film effectively.
