Hey Macca fans, what are your absolute favorite Paul McCartney songs? I need to bridge the Macca-gap in my psyche. I'm seeking to fill my mind with the music of Paul McCartney. So I ask of you, Sir Paul fans, what tunes ought I be listening to? What individual Macca songs would you recommend for someone just getting into his music? What represents his best work as a solo artist?

Okay, I started by eliminating the bigger hit singles. But if there are any of these you're not overly familiar with
    I'd suggest:

    Uncle Albert
Another Day (one of my wife's two favorites)
Hi Hi Hi (the other of my wife's favorites)
    Mull of Kintyre
    Girl's School
    No More Lonely Nights
    Take it Away
    My Brave Face

Beyond these I stopped at the '90s because I don't live in my albums the way I used to.
I'll leave someone else to pick through his renaissance years for you.

    ROCKIER Suggestions:

    Monkberry Moon Delight
    Too Many People -------- RAM
    Let Me Roll It
Nineteen Hundred and Eighty Five -- Band on the Run
Magneto and Titanium Man ---Venus and Mars
    I've Had Enough
Name and Address ---- London Town
Spin it On --- Back to the Egg
    Ballroom Dancing
What's That You're Doing (w' Stevie Wonder) ----Tug of War
    No Values
Not Such a Bad Boy ---- Give My Regards to Broad Street

    More of a BALLAD type:

    The Lovely Linda
    Every Night
    Junk ------ McCartney
    Dear Boy ---- Ram
Little Woman Love ---- RAM Archive release bonus track
    Tomorrow ---- Wild Life
San Ferry Anne ---- Speed of Sound
Arrow Through Me ---- Back to the Egg
    Here Today
    Wanderlust --- Tug of War
    Press ---- Press to Play
    Distractions
    This One
Put it There ---- Flowers in the Dirt

My favorite hit by Macca is Junior's Farm. My favorite album track by Macca is Big Barn Bed, even with the silly lyrics.

So you honestly looked and couldn't find a previous thread to put this in???? Pure laziness and yet another stupid pointless McCartney thread. Do you all live on a small island somewhere and just think up lame threads to fill this forum with? Someone please attach this to one of the other Macca threads on the same subject. Rant over :) Peace and Love.

    It should contain:
    Ban on the Run
    Jet
    Ram On (both of them)
You can do a short-cut and use the tracks from ' Wings Greatest' and 'All The Best' and have a search through his output from his post-1990 albums for some gems (like Heaven On A Sunday)

Wow: yeah, this does it. My eyes started to blur over discs 3 and 4, or at least until we got to "Flowers in the Dirt," at which point the Quality Control returns in spades. (Macca's QC, not the chap who posted this list. The track listing on those discs is as good as its going to get, given the available material.) But the first three discs are seamless, and I would agree with all those choices. Is the OP making an actual Mix Tape? As in a 90 minute Maxell high bias cassette? Each one of those discs would constitute an entire tape, I would guess, with about 10 minutes left over. In which case I'd add "Dear Boy," "Ram On" and "Get on The Right Thing" to Tape 1, "Nineteen Hundred and Eighty Five" and either "Treat Her Gently" and "Call me Back Again" or VM/Rock Show" to Tape 2, and "Rockestra Theme," "Greatest Show" and "Average Person" to Tape 3. (As I recall, there was always an extra minute or so on both sides of those old Maxells. . . )

Where's the "Peace and Love" in this post?

Thanks for all the other civil and helpful responses. I'm attempting to immerse myself in Macca music. It's good to know where to start.

I didn't know this myself until recently, but people use "mix-tape" as a general term to describe a compilation of music in any format. I did used to make a lot of real mix-tapes, on Maxell and TDK high-bias tapes, ah, the good old analog days....

Thanks for taking the time to compile your list here! Your friend must be very pleased with all this Macca music. Thanks to everyone else again for taking the time to compile their lists.

Peace and Love and Civility, truly, a-g

Ok. After hearing Ram for the first time four years ago, I was taken by the way it sounds like a patchwork quilt (not the best description, but the best one I could come up with at the moment). Today, I thought about creating a short McCartney playlist that would be in the same vein (at least in my mind anyway). I took some of my favorite songs and put them together to see how they would sound together. Very few 'hits' just lots of interesting bits.

    Too Many People (Ram)
    3 Legs (Ram)
    On The Way (McCartney II)
    Jenny Wren (Chaos & Creation)
    Ram On (Ram)
Friends To Go (Chaos & Creation)
    Every Night (McCartney)
Mrs. Vandebilt (Band On The Run)
    Another Day
    Tough On A Tightrope
Rough Ride (Flowers In The Dirt)
    Queenie Eye (New)
The Song We Were Singing (Flaming Pie)
    Singalong Junk (McCartney)
    New (New)
Off The Ground (Japanese Single Mix)
    Maybe I'm Amazed (McCartney)
One of These Days (McCartney II)

Maybe everything I have just said makes no sense, but so far the listening experience is pretty good.

Those are great suggestions, Mother. But as you can see, I tried to 'round out' every cd of my comp. That is to say: I tried not to break up tracks from one the albums over two cd's. Furthermore I've tried to get special things like the Frog song, Strawberry Fields, or the Noel Coward tribute at the end. Every cd can be played as a stand alone of a certain period.

At least that was my aim.

OK, I am really loving that first disc that I made that I just created a second disc. It is very interesting how the songs in a different order highlight parts that I didn't hear before. Here is the tracklist of the second set. (I'm not sure what you all thought of my first mix). Little thought to any hits, many overlooked pieces:

    Cosmically Conscious
    Little Woman Love
    London Town
    Too Much Rain
    Somebody Who Cares
    A Love For You
    Daytime Nighttime Suffering
    The Other Me

    Teddy Boy

Wingspan is a great place to start.
I'm a Beatles fanatic as is many of us on the forum but I never really got into the solo stuff. So, as far as McCartney goes, Wingspan was good for me. I'm still a novice though.
