This conversation has inspired me to give the second night at End Of Cole Avenue a spin while I work this afternoon. Being a Velvets fan and a lifelong Cowboys fan, I thought I'd share the digital artifact below. Lou was right on with the halftime score. Philadelphia Eagles 14 at Dallas Cowboys 49 Sunday, October 19, 1969 1 2 3 4 Final Philadelphia Eagles (4-9-1) 7 0 0 7 14 Dallas Cowboys (11-2-1) 28 14 0 7 49 Game Info Stadium Cotton Bowl Roof outdoors Surface grass Weather 69 degrees relative humidity 62%, wind 10 mph Scoring PHI DAL 1st Cowboys Lance Rentzel 9 yard pass from Craig Morton (Mike Clark kick) 0 7 Cowboys Lance Rentzel 16 yard pass from Craig Morton (Mike Clark kick) 0 14 Eagles Harold Jackson 65 yard pass from Norm Snead (Sam Baker kick) 7 14 Cowboys Bob Lilly 9 yard fumble return (Mike Clark kick) 7 21 Cowboys Bob Hayes 67 yard pass from Craig Morton (Mike Clark kick) 7 28 2nd Cowboys Lance Rentzel 15 yard pass from Craig Morton (Mike Clark kick) 7 35 Cowboys Pettis Norman 31 yard pass from Craig Morton (Mike Clark kick) 7 42 4th Eagles Bill Bradley 56 yard interception return (Sam Baker kick) 14 42 Cowboys Dan Reeves 1 yard rush (Mike Clark kick) 14 49
Interesting as well to hear Lou introduce Doug as his brother, a bit more than three years before he'd be on the radio wishing him dead. This set is SO release worthy.
Yeah, but he was a little too lightweight to play line-backer... This matrix set simply MUST be complete. There's absolutely no reason for the compilers to miss out anything.
I'm perfectly fine with them having such a lopsided score against the Eagles. But if the Vikings were involved, then things might get contentious. Historical record, be what it may.
If I wanted things to be contentious I'd say "Nate Wright" and "Drew Pearson" in the same sentence. But I digress from the thread topic.
Every now and then I REALLY miss ICE Magazine. Can you imagine the headline here: TWO VELVET UNDERGROUND MEGA SETS COMING ON SAME DAY IN LATE OCTOBER. Mostly, it would have been great fun to read the Bill Levenson interview that would have surely been included.
Will the Matrix recordings have more half-hour versions of "Sister Ray?" I like the ones on The Quine Tapes, but how much "Sister Ray" is too much?
I believe "alternate source" for December 3, 1969 means a different audience tape than Quine's tape, from which only "Sister Ray" seems to have survived. And there is contention regarding the dating of the track, which the circulation of the "alternate source" tape would likely resolve. The track appears, from a soundboard source, on the 3rd album box, dated as November 26/27.
I'm tempted to say that there's surely no such thing as too much "Sister Ray" but I suspect my family would disagree...
Does anyone know if they did "Hey Mr. Rain" at the Matrix? When I saw them at La Cave on a Sunday afternoon in 1969, they played very long versions of both "Sister Ray" and "Hey Mr. Rain", which were both incredible. I've never seen an extended "Hey Mr. Rain" on a boot.
There is no known Matrix version (or any circulating pre-reunion live recording of the song). I'd love to hear about a previously unknown version! The Velvets are so poorly documented, something like this is a very realistic possibility. BTW, my envy of you may turn into resentment at any moment now.
I did a quick "find" on this page: http://olivier.landemaine.free.fr/vu/live/1969/perf69.html, and there's no "Hey Mr. Rain"'s at all for 1969. Looks like you caught yourself quite the rarity for the time, besides just being damn lucky to see them at all.
I got a chance to talk to Doug Yule briefly at a launch party for American Flyer, and when I mentioned this performance he said "Mr. Rain! Wow, I'll bet even Lou's forgotten about that one."
I fully agree. I hope we get a Sister Ray per disc, I cannot get enough. And I hope to gawd Follow The Leader is on there.
Wow, I'd love to hear that. Hey, Mr. Rain first appears on a setlist in 1966, June I think, which is one of my all time velvet dreams. Imagine unearthing a live show from '66 that featured Mr. Rain, Foggy Notion, Story Of My Life...
something I never understood about this -- aren't ends (right or left, or defensive) generally even bigger than linebackers? In today's game, they are...
